Saw this movie with my gf and thought it was excellent. Saw priest afterwards and regretted ruining such a good movie night.

I keep recommending this to my friends and they keep giving me the "are you serious?" look b/c of the stereotype associated with the movie being a chick flick or something which its not.

The lady dragged me to this and I was pleasantly surprised. Very good comedy.

I would say go if you enjoy Judd Apatow style comedy. This isn't a chick flic at all imo.

I really don't get the comparisons between Hangover and Bridesmaids that seem popular. They aren't really that similar.

This is not worth running out to the theatre to see asap or anything like that. But if you're at the theatre and undecided on what to see and feel like seeing a comedy then you won't be completely regretting seeing this one.
Bridesmaids was produced from the Judd Apatow camp, The Hangover came from Todd Phillips. Both are responsible for a majority of the best comedies we have seen since 2003.

I'm more of an Apatow fanboy. Bridesmaids is definitely not a chick-flick. When guys hear chick-flick you think of: Kate Hudson, Katherine Heigl, Cameron Diaz, Sex and the City bitches, Renee Zellwegger...blah blah

Bridesmaids is PURE comedy because it has women that specialize in comedy: Wiig, Kemper, Melissa McCarthy (she stole the show). Do not mistake this is a chick-flick, it's a great piece of comedy and I predict will quickly become a line-o-rama once it's out on dvd-blu-ray.

I went with my wife, she hasn't laughed that hard during a movie. I saw it twice and loved it even more the 2nd time.

Finished golf early so solely based on the praise heaped on this movie I picked up my gal and went to the last matinee. I didnt care for it one bit which was surprising since Im a devout Apatow fan. Ive never walked out of a film in my life but I was pretty close on this one. Only stayed to placate my sig other. An hour of my life then was worth sacrificing to avoid the inevitable afternoon fight if I walked because she was digging it.

Had really high hopes based on the recos here but maybe Im not sophisticated 'nuff to appreciate the humor. I did score super points by suggesting we go see a movie 'we would both like so we can spend some time together'.

Spoiler:
the banter between wiig and the bosses wife (forgot name already) was contrived and uncomfortable. I wanted to leave at their first meeting. It didnt get better.

Ive never understood the whole movie on a first date thing. How is a place where you cant talk and are held captive by a presentation that you may emerge from with polarized opinions a good place to get to know each other?

That being said I wouldnt ever go to this movie with a girl you were in the 'danger zone' with. Meaning past casual dating but unsure where the future is going to go. Too many wheels could be set in motion...

Wiig is hit or miss with me. I find her very funny but on SNL she often goes way overboard and it sucks. I have found her more "subdued" in film, so I've enjoyed her in Adventureland and Extract. I could see if she wrote this that it might be too Wiig-overload. I'll still give it a look, though.

This movie interests me enough to get it from Netflix in 3 months.

Hit it on the head here. FWIW I really, really liked Adventureland and Extract.

I don't watch SNL anymore and don't know a thing about Wiig. Had to ask my sig-other "so who is that chick?" No idea. But I was pretty impressed with her actually. Decent acting chops I thought. Her character felt very real to me. But I don't have any of our SNL sketches in mind to bias me in a different direction perhaps. (??)

Thought a couple of the scenes were too over-the-top and contrived. The bit where they keep grabbing the microphone from each other over and over wasn't that funny to me. The part where she spazzes out at the shower thingee and is ripping apart the cookie just didn't seem right at all. So yeah, I had a couple of things with the movie that I thought could have been done better. But Wiig was good and the movie was pretty funny and it had a good story and good feel about it.

I was thinking I would get almost zilch from this movie except for maybe a couple of laughs and that's the attitude I approached it with. But I found it to be quite a bit better than I was expecting.

Spoiler:
The scene at the dress shop is worth the price of admission all by itself. Stupid, silly and had me and everybody in the audience busting a gut. I should be ashamed of myself for laughing so hard at that silliness but I couldn't help it.

For me that scene wouldve been decent if it didnt revert to the

Spoiler:
tension btwn wiig and bosses wife. just really unbalanced for me. The fat chick was the only thing holding it together.

I think the tension and 'uncomfortableness' that you mentioned is intentionally over-the-top. Otherwise it wouldn't have gone on so long at the wedding and other spots, imo. I thought it a play on the extent of the 'cattiness' that women will engage in. But maybe I'm over-analyzing and the makers didn't put that much thought into it after all.

Thought it was decent, but definitely not as good as The Hangover by any stretch. The entire sequence on the plane is excellent, but a few other bits fell flat or felt like they had stuff cut out of them. Also went to some weirdly depressing places a couple times, which I'm not sure works in a movie marketed as a pure comedy. Wiig is great though -- if you're a fan of her schtick in general, you'll almost certainly enjoy this.

Meh, not such a great scene imo. I do tend to not really go for the super-disgusting stuff as much as other people though. I did think the movie could have been better if much of the over-the-top stuff between her and Helen were toned down or eliminated. But they seemed to really want that aspect in there super-duper hard. The tennis match was somewhat funny and the kid's comment at the end was one of the best lines of the movie.

Speaking of which...should have had more of that kid. He was awesome. "F*** Off Helen.
Would have also liked a bit more of Becca (perky/smiley red-head) and even Rita (ticked off blonde with three boys).

Taking some of the silly rival stuff away from Annie and Helen to have a couple more little scenes with Becca and/or Rita would have worked a bit better for me. They were pretty much completely cut-out after the airplane scene. I would have really liked to see Becca transform a little bit after the knowledge she gained from Rita in their drunken airplane chat. Missed opportunity there imo.

Laughed a ton during the movie, some things could have been done better, but I don't care, really enjoyed it, I'm a bit of an Apatow mark, but I think it stands on its own as one of the upper echelon comedies of the last 5 years. Really liked the Chris O'Dowd cop character, hope he gets more work.

I really enjoyed this movie and I thought O'Dowd was superb as well.

I'm planning a first date with a girl who claims to be a movie junkie. Like she says she goes at least once a week. So I suggested dinner + movie. Bad idea? Would this movie not be good for that?

splashpot - I don't understand the question. Is there some type of movie that is not good for dinner and a movie on a date? I mean, I guess I wouldn't take a first date to see something super deep or depressing but obviously this isn't like that. So I honestly am not sure what you are trying to ask.

If anybody listened to the Filmdrunk Frotcast this week on my advice, just know that usually it's much, much better than that, as usually Lindy doesn't bring her idiotic friend on there to be offended by everything and annoying. Ugh.
