I mean in Germany it is completely symmetric. In a first 6 months both sides can give one month notice without giving any reasons for that. It is considered bad etiquette, but it is done, although rather seldom.
How it is in USA? How long is standard probation period? With which notice can the company let an engineer go and vice versa?
