If it is an HR person responding like this remember you are their work so they have to be quick and efficient.

Why don't you have a separate log-in for her?

I feel like you need to namedrop someone you worked with at the company, assuming there is someone there who thinks highly of you.

^^ I totally had the impression.

And another reason for posting that: Is 80 k a year realistic expectation? I like that MLYLT asks for that. I totally think she should get it. But in Europe she wouldn't. How is about USA?

As mentioned previously, a lot of the reason there is a pay gap is that women don't negotiate their salaries nearly as much as men do.

As shown earlier, MLYLT also is a terrible negotiator and has asked for a lesser salary than what is deserved with her experience numerous times.

From what it sounds like, she shouldn't be making less than 6 figures at this point, and yet she took an engineering job for like a $60k salary which is pretty much entry level salary.

Then again, I actually have no idea how many years of experience she actually has, but it seems like she has quite a few. Probably why she can't hold a job because she's vague and a poor communicator.

I took a salary for 71k....my starting salary out of school was 75k.

Larry, I sent you a PM...if you'll spare your awesome interview skills, El D will provide feedback. I'm cool with it being a part of this thread to help others that might struggle with interviewing.

Gus, are you an engineer....why do you think six figures is reasonable?

This may be a blistering hot take or it may be totally different for different people, but here's a thought:

Think about various mechanisms of communication you're going to use for job seeking -- email correspondence, cover letter, resume, phone conversation, in person interview. These media have different capacity for editing. To me, it's a very bad sign that you send an email which again, conveys "not a serious job-seeker." I think you really need to work on your written communication for clarity, precision, and content.

Why? Because it will be helpful to you achieving your end goals. But also, I believe that if you go through the exercise of improving your written work, you'll begin internalizing the patterns of clear communication and start speaking more clearly on phones and in person. While you can't easily practice editing your speech, you can start removing bad habits from all your communication starting with types that allow for editing. You should also of course work on interviewing directly by practicing it. You should be doing everything you can to make your writing and speaking more compelling, since this is pretty clearly a weakness of yours that is likely closing professional doors to you.

I am pretty awful at these sort of things but I would try to insert and elaborate on some of the applicable skills that you provide. You have experience in that stuff but what did you actually do? ok, leading a team is good, but what else did you do. what did your project accomplish?

also, say something about how you are committed to learning and how you realize how important learning is in this day and age of rapid technological growth or something.

and ffs don't send that as written. proofread and eliminate typos and grammatical errors . like, above all, do that.

Victor,

Those are all reasonable and valuable critiques.

Unfortunately, MLYLT already sent this version of the letter.

well, theres always next time.

anyway, I just went through the job hunt and I had a whole team at my disposal for this stuff. it was incredibly draining still.

regardless, grammatical errors were stressed the most by far. if you sent that email with those errors, there is pretty much no chance.

How many years of experience do you have? I feel like 15 just as a guess. Someone in Texas with 5 years of experience should make no less than $80k a year. You said your starting salary was $75k, so unless I'm just way off about the actual amount of time you've been working, I can't see any reason you shouldn't be making 6 figures at this point.

Although $75k would be quite a bit for a starting salary 15 years ago, so maybe more like 10. Again, you haven't communicated the details clearly enough, which might be an indicator for a lot of things.

I am currently looking for an entry level engineering position. I know if I had 5+ years of experience I would've been hired 6+ months ago.

Mylt,

Women work less than men (children) , negotiate salaries /raises less aggressively etc etc... Not saying the pay gap doesn't exist rather there is logic to its existence. Also, a lot of those graphs /charts tend to be disingenuous as they control for some factors but not others.
Lastly, it was already mentioned above but it's pretty ironic that you blame the fact that you're a woman for your lack of employment but refuse to take responsibility for your abusive actions in this relationship (actions a man would be jailed and charged for).

Gus,

It seems (though I could be off by a ton because I haven't scanned the thread for more details/etc) like in mid 2014 she was at an engineering firm for 2 years, then she left, started somewhere else, and was laid off somewhere around 7 or 8 months later (spring 2015), then she got a new job that started in ~10/2015, from which she was laid off in 6/2016. (Link

So something on the order of 3.5 years experience total with a very meh work history and likely to be weak on references/etc, with very little relevant work experience at the most recent 2 jobs.

prana,

Keep in mind it's a Quality Assurance job, so ability to catch errors seems like might be an important skill they're looking for.

Your grammar is quite poor for an engineer. Communicating via written text should be very easy for you.

Where did you get your degree?
