Gotta go with your strengths. I'll bet there's a market for 280 lb. personal trainers who specialize in bench and leg press.

As a kid I would've been shocked to learn that it's either work as a professional in your trained profession ... or make minimum wage.

I would've thought there would be other skills picked up along the way. I'm not judging, it's admirable that you're willing to take a menial job.

You're too big to serve? You'd prbly beat minimum wage by a lot and can still work other jobs around that since it's usually 4-6 hour shifts. Plus you could potentially just work at night and have time to focus on job hunting or whatever during normal daylight business hours.

I could find a serving job I guess....just dealing with people like springs Ugggh.

I doubt anywhere other than min wage would hire me knowing I would leave as soon as I found an engineering job.

I've worked in retail, fast food, as a server, for a hotel, managed gas stations, tutored math at Silvan.....the best was retail.

When I couldn't find a job I worked overnight at a hotel, left me free to interview whenever and was pretty chill.

some of those jobs are better than others

Yeah, I used to work the graveyard shift on weekends at a hotel. It was chill, but I got sick of folding sheets all night

I can still play poker to supplement some; I'm only free for that every other Sat night though. That could be and avg of $400/ month--enough to cover groceries.

I might actually do this.

Does anyone have any tips for me in finding an engineering job though? I don't want to be off work for months again, it's making me depressed thinking about it.

Instead of waiting until you are **** canned start looking for work while you are employed.

Find a recruiter who is in your location and specializes in your industry.

I have a couple of recruiters looking for me now.
Last time I worked with about 5 recruiters and applied to hundreds of jobs....like 10-20 jobs a day.
Should I change the name on my resume to a mans name? What kind of voodoo can I do to help?

I'm going to research companies near me and spend the day Wed just showing up and handing them resumes.

Are you using a resume service?

No, I posted my resume here last time and I applied all the feedback I got. I guess I could post again. It makes me nervous to spend money and maybe only get some formatting done.

One recruiter told me last time that a lot of places discard your resume if you don't have a Dallas zip code; I've since moved to Dallas, so maybe that will help some.

I am curious what the day to day tasks are for your type of engineering specialty.

Maybe that's your problem, blaming your own failures on imaginary external factors....

I had a hard time until I used a service, I really feel it made a service and now I have a job where I don't pray I get killed on the way to work.

What failures? I literally applied for hundreds of jobs for almost a year.
I said that because I work in a male dominated industry where women have a lot harder time finding a job.

The last company I was at hired only 1.5% women an 98.5% men.

If I could change my name on my resume, I might be able to get a few more interviews.

stop just applying for jobs willy-nilly. most of those are shots in the dark. you work in the industry--network and your chances for finding a job go way up per job applied. yes it takes more effort but you are likely putting a ton of effort in to crap with applying for a ton of online jobs.

I'll all the wife and pm it to you, she was frustrated one night and just did it without asking me, I probably would have said no because it was a few hundred bucks and I didn't see the point. Lol me, the thing paid for itself the first week at the new job.
