So I've now applied for 75 jobs. All of the ME jobs in Dallas are with construction companies, and they all want 10 yrs experience Ugggh. My plan is to move in with my sister next week, save money, and keep looking for jobs in Dallas.

If they can be that selective, there is probably a glut of ME's in Dallas. Probably time to consider a career change if you insist upon remaining in the area.

The companies probably aren't that selective even if they say that.

10 years experience turns into 4 years really fast if you network your way in.

I'm going to a job fair tomorrow, and this social night out networking thingy next week.

I say we pack our bags and move to NYC together.

So Careerbuilder has this thing where you can see how you compare to other applicants. Out of 537 applicants who applied for a mechanical engineering position on 27 actually have a degree in Mechanical Engineering....so bazaar!

I bet 536 of them can figure out how to spell bizarre

Mlylt id bet some of those 95% score interviews due to professional looking application packages and network.

The correct response to that screen is to be mildly annoyed that Careerbuilder presented you with stupid, irrelevant information. If you actually infer that none of the 503 people displayed as "Not Applicable" lack the major when either 5/7ths or 6/7ths of of those with well-defined majors in the system, as opposed to inferring something like "oh most applicants apply to positions without completing a Careerbuilder profile, they just send resumes along," you're either an idiot or willfully misleading yourself (or both).

I didn't fill out a profile; its part of the application where you have to select your degree, so I would be right to assume that the other applicants didn't select B.S. Mechanical Engineering

On the other hand, I guess your total inability to problem solve or think creatively outside of the box you were presented by an external source does line up well with various stereotypes of mechanical engineers, so there's that.

Like here's my allegory for much of this thread:

I hand you a hammer, and point at a nail, you happily hammer the nail. I point you at a screw, you nonchalantly show me how well a hammer can drive in a screw. I show you a clogged toilet, you immediately start smashing it to bits. I ask you why you did that, you say "well you gave me a hammer, that's the only way I could think of to unclog it with a hammer." I ask you why you didn't leave the room and get a plunger, you yell that I must be picking on you because you're a woman.

I'm sure if you sit down for an hour or two you'll be able to figure out why it's not likely that your earlier statements about the degree statuses of other applicants are actually true, and other things that might cause there to be hidden information trapped in the "Not Applicable" group.

I admire your spunk. Never admit a mistake no matter how much evidence to the contrary exists.
