Interesting that tdarko quotes this joke because imo Hicks just retreaded Lenny Bruce. Not that there's anything wrong with that, comedy is in the delivery. Well, unless you're Carlos Mencia I guess. Then you're just a no-talent thief.

Bruce's version: If Jesus had been killed twenty years ago Christians would be walking around with electric chairs around their necks.

Carlin stole the 'seven dirty words' bit, one of his most famous, directly from Bruce.

Denis Leary built a successful career cloning Hicks. And so it goes.

**** it, let's just stipulate that Richard Pryor was the greatest stand up comic ever and let it go.

Bill Connolly imo.

i don't think that's a retread at all - both jokes are inspired by the inherent absurdity in wearing a torture/killing device as a religious symbol, and the jokes go in a completely different direction.

I dare anyone to listen to these two bits and not laugh hysterically. If you dont, then as someone posted earlier. You probably think eddie murphy is funny.

Bill Hicks is funny when you compare him to the comics of his generation. He doesn't really stand up to the test of time.

I don't hate Bill Hicks. I like his kind of comedy, but he always seemed to have this arrogant and obnoxious tone that bugged me.

Also, I'm not really buying this "well, he was really good for his time" stuff. IMO, there is nothing Hicks did that Sam Kinison and George Carlin didn't do much better.

he usually gets mentioned up there in the all time great comedians catagory.

Pryor and carlin are usually ahead of him. I personally don't find him hilarious

The holy trinity of comedy pretty much always has Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce with Carlin or Hicks at the 3rd depending on who you're talking to. It goes to Carlin by leaps and bounds for me. I can't think of who would be the 5th in a holy quintet though.

love Bill Hicks, almost done reading his bio also.

Couldn't care less about convincing people whether or not he's funny so not gonna bother searching links or anything.

It's all a matter of opinion. I think Bill Burr is one of the funniest comedians right now but I doubt many people will agree with me.

Hicks was an original in that his bitterness was real and depressing and always sincere. Not what you would think would work in standup, but he made it work. Every other bitter comic seemed to make it an act, but Bill seemed to just be that way. A miserable person who hated the world.

yeah, English accents sound gay, anti-smoking nazis are dumb. That's all you got?

I thought Eddie Murphy was good on SNL, and his standup was funny about 15 years ago.

I remember seeing him on a Rodney Dangerfield special on HBO back in the mid 80's and thinking he was a future star. Andrew Dice Clay, Robert Schimmel and Barry Sobel were also on that show.

Hicks became a fav of mine after seeing that special.

I really like him a lot, but OP, you are totally spot on.

He wasnt the funniest comedian, and he re-used alot of material. He did have one or two sublime moments though. However, he did speak some universal truths about the world that makes his life and death all the more poignant.

And anyway, us brits love a a good anti-US rant. THats all there is to it really :-)

i'm a fan and have been since i first heard his material, but i'm english so go figure.

yeah, he reuses material, but he concentrated on what he was good at, and it continued to make people laugh.

yeah, he was angry, but what the hell's wrong with that?

as a comedian, i found him pretty funny, but not funny enough to put him in the top tier of live comics; as a social commentarian, he was the nuts, and i strongly agree with him on most of his views. that's not because i'm a fanboy - though i am one - but rather because he happens to share the same views as me.

Eddie Murphy's standup was amazing and anybody insulting him should be forced to watch Dane Cook on loop.

I love Hicks, but Ray and Delirious >>>>>>>>>>>>>

I like Hicks, but I seriously doubt he's top 3 or even top 4. Maybe top 10...

1 - George Carlin
2 - Richard Pryor
3 - Lenny Bruce
4 - Rodney Dangerfield
5 - Sam Kinison
6 - Mitch Hedberg
7 - Louis CK
8 - Steven Wright
9 - Norm MacDonald
10 - Bill Hicks

He has become a joke in himself over the past 25 years or so but Bill Cosby was one of the most brilliant comics ever.

Also Dave Chappelle blows Hicks' ****ing doors off. His Sesame Street bit is genius.
