I was wondering how long it would be before the "But it's so healthy! And I'm saving the environment!" argument came out.

Yeah, because helping the enviroment is such a bad thing, a real manly man pollutes as much as possible!

What could be better than "rolling coal" on a bicyclist early in the morning?

As a frequent pedestrian, let me warn all you cyclists. If you're on my sidewalk instead of in the road where you belong, I'm not giving one inch. If there's not enough room to pass me, you're the one who will veer onto the grass or dirt, not me. Most cyclists are pretty good about this, but I've dealt with *******s more than once.

No, helping the environment is a good thing! It just doesn't give one a free pass to selfishly ignore traffic rules and be an *******.

Yeh for sure there are times I get carried away and would be well served to reign it in out of respect for everyone else. Appreciate the feedback, today at work we will do an experiment and do a few runs following all traffic rules.

Regarding the case in the OP if I was in that same situation and someone rear ended me turning right in that situation in plain view and with right of way I'd be hoping that car had its dash cam running and subpoena the contents. Also lots of CCTV systems running so there's also that to look at for potential exoneration. Now if she had her right turn signal on and he speed up passing her on the right as she was turning & got hit that's on him clearly.

Can't tell you how many times per day people are out there on smartphone which creates a far more dangerous environment than a few bicycles riding aggressively. Florida leads the US in cycling fatalities year after year, don't want to become a part of that group so it's always good to re-evaluate how I operate the bike.

Bikers are bad, you shouldn't bike. If you bike, you're bad. Because bikes are bad, its a bad thing to ride a bike, so don't ride a bike, mmkay. So don't be bad for riding a bike, because riding a bike is bad, mmmmkay.

Right so in certain states of Australia no one should cycle except on bike paths? Get real. I can't believe what a ridiculous attitude some people have. Oh yeah and Dids the reason people keep bringing up that it is healthy and good for the environment is because they are both really good arguments.

So I'm going to assume you're okay with me running down the middle of the road not paying attention to any traffic signals, stop signs, or rules of the road in general no matter how busy it is. Hey, it's healthy! Right!

They are both really good arguments for bicycling. They are really bad arguments for tarding up traffic.

Nobody is telling you to not ride your damn bike Rexx. I don't think anybody disagrees that it provides some light cardio and might make some minuscule positive effect on the environment. Neither of those things have anything to do with the subject of this thread at this point.

People are saying that if you are going to ride your bicycle, don't be a dickhead and ride in a way that causes traffic and puts people (especially yours) in danger.

Before you make your "government should do more!" argument again: in the United States, about 0.56% of people commute with a bicycle. In some cities it might possibly work out, but in the vast majority of the USA, it would be a huge waste of resources to do what you want them to do.

After reading the article a second time it appears the cyclist was traveling in the same direction as the unmarked cop car before it turned, if he was riding in the crosswalk then presumably he had preciously been riding on the sidewalk which makes it harder for cars to see you and makes these type of right hook situations much more likely. Without knowing that roads posted speed or whether or not the cop was using a phone I'd go ahead and say the cyclist is mostly at fault despite being "in clear view".

One of my original OP's ITT was pretty poorly worded, I probably look like a maniac to someone who's not an experienced cyclist but I've been cycling for almost 30 years most of it in urban environments, know the delivery area intimately, and trust my reflexes, senses and equipment.

Part of the JJ's delivery scheme is they pay you $5.50 when your clocked out on a delivery and $8/hr when your working in the shop so it creates a double incentive for riders to make the delivery ( hopefully w/tip) and move on to the next one.

There's lots of good arguments for cycling and while the current environmental benefits may be "minuscule" here in the USA that could certainly change over time if collectively more people cycled. My best pitch for cycling is that for me it's a whole lot of fun, the better I get the more fun it seems to be. Over time drivers get conditioned to having bikes on the road which makes it a more pleasant experience.

The same cyclist who feels entitled to ride 10 mph on a 40 mph road and get deference from cars also somehow feels entitled to ride 10 mph on a pedestrian path and for them to gtfo of the way.

Also when I was speaking about the positives of cycling, I do so more to encourage others to take it up. Society as a whole would be better off if more people cycled to work etc. I don't have an issue with people using cars but I do think having better transport systems that encouraged walking, cycling and using public transport can only be a good thing. Roads would be less congested, people would be healthier and there would be less pollution. It's a win for everyone, motorists included.
So agree with this. And I use a bike my whole life for commuting and everything.

It is not a waste of resources in Europe. Why would be it waste of resources in USA? I mean it is so obvious that a better system of public transportation +improvement of roads to be more biker friendly would lead to the improved quality of life.

I mean...... I get a good, by the standards of many here, work-out every day and I don't even notice it. It is just a part of normal life. How many of you struggle with getting enough physical activity every day?

That said I rarely to never ride in traffic because I am scared of all douche car drivers, who bypass to close, go to fast and are completely inconsiderate. And I do use left and right hand signs.

i would accept the inconvenience of construction on every street for bike lanes if the funds are raised from a tax on bicycles

It would be an improved quality of life for you. It is nice that you are getting a workout during your commute, but nobody but you really cares, or wants to pay for it.
