I got into an argument with an acquaintance the other day

its a chinese buffet, where the waiter gets your plates and drinks. as we were leaving he says "you're not gonna tip them?" I said "what the ****, this isnt a restaurant" and an argument ensued

I don't think im cheap, maybe I am, I never have cash on me on hand but I still don't think its wrong not to tip. if we are at a sit down restaurant then you HAVE to tip, even if its ****ty service.

I know there is a tipping thread already out there so dont want to make this a tip or dont tip type of thread but was wondereing what people usually do here

Is this like when someone says "no offense" then saying something offensive or when they say "I dont mean to bother you but" before bothering you.

Your friend is right
And if you get ****ty service in a restaurant don't tip

I chose Ye.

So you didn't want it to be a tipping thread but rather a tipping-or-not-tipping thread. Makes sense.

Was this acquaintance a friend before the argument?

Yes usually a couple bucks. Every buffet I've been to refills my drinks and clears my dirty plates. That's worth a buck or two per person imo

Thread probably should be merging into tipping thread tho

But it's not a tipping thread.

Definitely tip as long as the server kept my drinks filled, cleared plates promptly, etc.

Are we thinking that the pleasure's IQ is higher or lower than the would-be robber in this story?

lol at "a couple of bucks". Do you also still tip the bellboy "$1 per bag" because that's what it says in the Miss Manners 1978 edition?

Going to depend on the level of service (pay at counter in advance or pay with the "server" at table? how much attention did we require?), but if I was alone and it was say $25 and I'm paying at the table, I'm leaving at least $30. I wouldn't consider this substantially different from a regular sit-down restaurant situation. Just because the server doesn't have to write down an order? Should be at least 15% (which is basically unacceptably cheap at this point for a regular sit-down place).

Btw, in low-bill situations like this in regular restaurants where you're alone or ordering cheap food, you should usually be tipping well more than what the % math would indicate. Like if you're paying $12 for breakfast and you had a table by yourself, $4 is the absolute bare minimum even though that's a "huge" 33% tip. I'd leave $5-$10. Your cheap bill required barely any less service than a party of 2 who had a $55 bill.

I do normally tip more than my baseline of 20% on smaller bills, but paying $5-10 on a $12 bill is crazy. Well $5 isn't, but $10 is. Unless you're like the most picky/annoying/demanding customer in the world.

fwiw I would tip $3 in that spot. I think a 25% tip is very reasonable.

As for buffets I tip about 10%

You're an idiot. $3 is standard on a $12 bill. **** off with tipping $10 on $12. Do you have some sort of inferiority complex?

I leave a couple bucks. You can't target me specifically with spit in the food, so you don't get as much.

If a server is involved of course you tip.

It's weird because if I go to say a Chinese or Indian buffet or something, I pretty much just treat it like any other restaurant and tip 20%. Maybe 15% if the waiter didn't really do much.

But somehow if I go to say the Bellagio buffet, I leave like $5 on the table after. Even though it costs like $40 a person (usually fully comped tho).
