Sounds better than a cheesesteak.

It's how sootface phrased it that came across bitter and not jokey at all. He also took it further, but quickly edited those secondary remarks before it could be quoted.

His joke was actually a statement that he said he stands behind - "no good jewish delis, even with all the VC firms in town."

A real joke (good, bad, or indifferent) is something like: What did the rabbi say to the priest?

Spoiler:
Don't be so touchy

What did the priest say back to the rabbi?

Spoiler:
Don't be so nosey

In fairness a lot of the mass produced sauerkraut is pretty terrible. Good kraut makes a difference, just like good pastrami makes a difference.

I love a good pastrami but am definitely on team Reuben, it's just a great combination of flavors.

The only Reuben I've had was a pastrami Reuben with sauerkraut and it was ****ing delicious. Not sure if having pastrami in it disqualifies it from being a "real" Reuben, to the connoisseurs here.

I live 30 minutes from Philly and I'd say the best Cheesesteak I've had at least that I can remember is one I had in NJ when my dad wanted to go to this place that was Bruce Willis' favorite place to eat when he lived there. Philly's famous cheesesteak places seems about on par with any good pizzeria/sub shop around DE. Meanwhile some country store in NJ had one that was pretty amazing.

There's nothing wrong with cheesesteak making it to the finals.

It may have a low floor but it's ceiling is incredibly high and a great cheesesteak is incredible.

pwnsall where did you go to eat cheesesteaks in philadelphia? ginos and pats are okay at best. the bread really matters. i personally don't care if the meat is pre-cooked or not but some people think the former means the mean will be drier. not going to lie, getting breakfast sandwich in the semis was kind of a gimme.

i think the fact that it's pretty easy to make decently well helps it in this competition. other than subway's version, i'm not sure if I've really had a bad one.

So much this. It's like putting spinach on your favorite sandwich. Fresh spinach is good while canned spinach is a monstrosity. The kraut they use is coming in a 10 gallon can.

To clarify my earlier statement: kraut and spinach from a can are gag foods.

The case is only made worse when they charge you $15 for a sandwich, a limp pickle, and stale chips.

The great thing about a cheesesteak is that any highly marbled thinly sliced ribeye salt & peppered, white onions, cheese whiz, provolone, or American on an Armarosa roll cooked on a flat top grill can be one of the best, most consistent sandwiches you can get. If sauerkraut needs to be "done right" to be good, yet 95% of the accessible sauerkraut is that canned/bagged, throw up smelling mush, then you're always going to have a Reuben that's lacking in one of the key ingredients almost everywhere you get it. How it's made is this far seems to be on luck of the brackets.

Cheesesteak is pretty much the USA Dream team, waiting to play the bum squad in the Gold Medal round.

I like sauerkraut out of a can.

Don't really remember where I had cheesesteak. It does seem to be pretty easy to make at home, though, and obviously beef cheese onions and bread tastes pretty good.

When I think of Reuben I think thick cut corned beef not deli corned beef.

It's true that cheesesteak is more consistent, but that's irrelevant to this comp. Doesn't matter what the average is. It's the one that you would get. So if you all the places you know of make ****ty Reubens, then you vote Cheesesteak. However if 99 of the places you know make ****ty Reubens, but there is one nearby you that makes one better than any cheesesteak, then you vote Reuben.

It may seem weird, but those are the rules. Maybe you can have a sandwich consistency contest next month.

Definitely the truth. I used to work at this one place that would bring in the whole shoulder and slow cook and season it in an oven. They cut it by knife. The photo up thread is sad to look at, especially if it's more than $5.

I've had cheese steak made from steak'ums or whatever that thin gray meat is. Definitely not okay either.

Well you concluded with how Cheesesteak was the USA dream team for this competition, but the preceding justification given was about consistency. So, you can see how one could be confused by what you wrote.

Neck and neck battle here, wow. I think I'll get a takeout reuben from the diner a block away to have while watching basketball tonight and to send good karma towards the results of this poll. I'm sure it will use kraut from a can and all the rest, but yet it will still be delicious because a diner reuben is impossible to **** up.

It's definitely the board. The board chose to add a few sandwiches that are either too localized or hard to find locally.

Budweiser isn't the best beer in the world, Britney Spears isn't the world's best musician, and the Dallas Cowgirls aren't the hottest cheerleaders in the NFL. They all just happen to be easy to find and deeply familiar.

A sliced beef Reuben is easier to find than one with hand-cut beef.

A breakfast sandwich is found in 1M locations across the US.

A Philly is pretty hard to totally screw up and is available everywhere.

It's a popularity contest. To be popular, you have to be known.

I'll be sure to hold a vigil for the McGriddle.
