I just moved from Denver... and it is not known for barbecue or any kind of food really. There are a couple of decent barbecue places but only one that had legit brisket that I know of. I would have never thought to make a sandwich out of it because I ddint even know that was a thing.

I just looked at the menu. No mention of sandwiches.

Is $21/lb for brisket normal?
Yes, I live in Texas.
That is a standard price for brisket, but the meet on that website looks white on the inside....that's not normal.

I hope when Tuma gets back from his self ban he can give me some tips on where to find really good banh mi. I've been pretty underwhelmed with the local options I've tried.

Action,

At least you're not buying BBQ in SF. Here's the kind of prices we're presented with:

Turn in your foodie card. With with juice? Really?

And the slice of ham, swiss, pickles and mustard you need to make that in to an even better Cuban should be pretty affordable too.

I can get a bec any day of the week. That brisket is only prepared twice during the year in my house on certain holidays, and one of those occasions doesn't allow bread. Experiencing the deliciousness of that combo is an annual rite. And yes the juice for dunking is a must.

Sure. I have nothing against jus. I'm just saying that au means "with," so "with au jus" is a ridiculous statement.

Yep, one of the places I work at has a Cubano on the menu. Thanks for the reminder, I've only had like two in the last week.

While we're on the subject of brisket, is waiting in line at Franklin BBQ worth it? Last time I was in Austin was before it existed, but I'm trying to come up with an excuse to go there just to try it. It is it really that much better than the next best option (which I'm sure is probably great too).

If you know when you're going to be in town you can pre-order Its cut fresh, you just don't have to wait. 5lb minimum but it's worth it if you got a group of 4 or so and have a fridge in your hotel. If you are willing to wait in line go during a weekday.

edit: they've expanded the pre-order a lot it, used to only be for a couple orders each day, they now make it much more accessible. Definitely pre order, and you can still plop down at a table and eat there.

Melk,

Everything that tx said, just do it. But if you don’t, just go to some bbq place and get brisket, it’ll be great. Especially if you go to salt lick.

Thanks. Might give it a shot. I'd be willing to pay for some extra meat I may or may not eat to save time in line.

Been to salt lick several times. Is Franklin really that much better?

Last time I was in Austin I missed a free salt lick trip because I was so hungover from Mojitos at The Nomad the night before. Have still never been, what a looser.

Much, much better. Salt Lick has trailed off, but still great ambience and better bbq than 95% of what's called bbq in the country. There are plenty of solid places actually in Austin nowadays so you don't have to wait at Franklin, but if that's one of the reasons for the trip obv go.

Well I'm sold. It's been a long time since I've been to Salt lick (~2009) and I thought it was quite good. I also lived in TX a long time ago, so I have had quite a bit of elite TX BBQ, but everyone says Franklin is the best. So I guess I'm going to have to figure out a reason to go down there and try it.

1. No bahn mi ever because every single one I've encountered has cilantro and cilantro is disgusting
2. Breakfast vs. brisket was my toughest one, but breakfast sandwiches are just too damn good.

Melk,

Once again, +1 to what tx says. Just listen to him re: Texas bbq.

Especially if you’ve had lots of great bbq, it’s worth trying Franklin’s. I have a real soft spot for the whole byob and all you can eat vibe at salt lick, but it has been a bunch of years since I’ve been there so I don’t even know if it’s still like that.

In Austin, the order for me is

Franklin's, LaBBQ, Micklewait, Leroy and Lewis, Terry Black's , Stiles Switch

El D, there are multiple Salt Lick's but the one in Driftwood is still like that because Driftwood is a dry county.

goof, this is gonna blow your mind so take a seat right now but you can totally ask for no cilantro and they will usually do that for you. Don't let this be the thing that stops you.

Yeah the entire thing has gone sideways at this point.

I love me a cheesesteak and have made more than a couple multi hour trips to Philly in the past solely to get one, but any result that has a cheesesteak defeating banh mi is just invalid and there's no arguing that. Might as well move this entire thing to the flat earth thread with that many believers.

Much like with Ms OOT, you really only need to look at how Rapini is voting to see what the correct choices actually are because he pretty much always votes wrong. Guessing his finger must have slipped when he correctly clicked on Pastrami instead of BLT but the rest are standard incorrect votes.
