Reuben is absolutely an elite sandwich and lol at anyone who thinks differently. It is a guaranteed top item at any diner, impossible to **** up

it's probably one of the easiest sandwiches to **** up and that's one of the reasons it's generally a terrible sandwich.

common ways to **** up a reuben:
- bad (stale) bread
- bad meat
- bad sauerkraut
- bad mustard
- bad ratios
- putting thousand island/russian dressing/whatever you want to call it on it
- not putting mustard on it

that should really be the complete list of ways to **** up a reuben but apparently people like deliberately ****ing it up by putting coleslaw or something on it? though obviously that's no longer a reuben

i guess none of that matters cuz obv a reuben is just a ****ed up corned beef sandwich to begin with

Stinky,

My favorite Reuben in sf is at Mikkeller Bar:

They slice their pastrami thick and get the edges nice and crispy it’s so damn good. This terrible pic illustrates that:

Top one looks good (but not elite 8) and bottom bread looks too oily. that's another way to screw up a Reuben I forgot about

If you like steak + cheese, you need a Balboa in your life. It's basically a steak and cheese (or hot roast beef and cheese) lathered in garlic butter and or served on crusty garlic bastone.

Stinky, isn't montreal style smoked meat closer to pastrami than corned beef? I'll grant the cuts are different somtimes but the cooking process is closer.

There's no smoking with corned beef at a Jewish deli in thr US.

i think montreal smoked meat is somewhere between the two. i haven't had pastrami often but it seems smokier to me. i don't really like smoky in general.

stinkypete calling cole slaw salad is pretty elite.

i am pretty certain that the corn beef that is used where i eat my rebuens is not elite enough that it tastes better without "salad" or swiss cheese or thousand island. i can appreciate that some elite Katz deli corn beef is so amazing that those things ruin it. i respect stinkypete's passion and disdain for the americanization of Montreal's beloved sandwich.

Not enough love for muffaletta or Monte Cristo. Not enough laughs for BLT and reuben.

muffaletta is another one that is heavily location dependent. i love olive salad and have even coughed up $20 to get some online from the Oriental Grocery. I usually make mine on an everything bagel because where the **** do i get the bread from?

Is Arepa considered a sandwich? Cause they are also pretty elite.

i mean obviously cole slaw is salad... it's like calling a sub a sandwich.

and obviously the second you put salad on a sandwich it's not a reuben

I find it amusing that there is a Schwartz's in Montreal and a Black's in central Texas both known for smoking brisket, albeit in completely different forms.

I'm thinking a certain poster doesn't know much about Reubens or sandwhiches. I'm taking my dad out to a sub shop that Bruce Willis loves today for a birthday meal, he loves weird places like that to go to and I think it's Willis' hometown. Hoping they have Reubens with the cole slaw.

So ****ing good.

there's basically no where to get a great sandwich where I live.

If I'm making one at home, I prefer melts. Tuna melt with tomato is pretty damn good. Ham and cheese melt is another favorite. Don't need many ingredients to make it amazing.

My dad used to make the best sandwiches and I've never been able to replicate it. He'd take any kind of ingredients, slap them into a sandwich and it'd taste good. His dad used to take peanut butter and mayo with pickles and make a sandwich out of that, my dad swore it was good but I'd never ever eat that. This isn't the depression era anymore.

There are many millions more people who's favorite sandwich is a BLT versus those who's favorite is a muffaletta.

Can you even get a muffaletta anywhere outside of New Orleans?

by that i'm going to assume you mean anyone who thinks there's salad on a reuben (also prob anyone who can't spell sandwich)

just to make sure i wasnt crazy i google image searched reuben:

as you can see the only one with salad on it also has turkey or something so it's pretty clear a reuben doesn't have salad on it

I agree with Rapini on the oyster poboy, done correctly they are defiantly elite. I am a bit confused about bagels not being bread.

Hating on Reubens is a terrible look.

I grew up with my dad making me sandwiches for school almost everyday, and I'm an improved cook and sandwich maker over my previous generation.

What I'm trying to say is, I make some elite sandwiches.

if you put miracle whip on your sandwiches there's a special place in hell for you and i basically can't respect anyone that does this

Definitely agree that Cuban is elite tier. Breakfast sandwich is nowhere near elite, imo. It is a solid 18-10 every season, but never outstanding. Chicken Parm is like 23-5 or 8-20. Just soo much variance.

So I'm supposed to DQ reuben sandwiches because morons **** them up? No way. Don't buy them from morons?

Reubens have cheese, kraut, russian on rye. Any variant is a different sandwich. Either way, it's not the most elite on that list by a long stretch.

Po boys are regional and def not elite imo.
