Wookie,

Wait, are you now saying patty melts are not burgers?

I almost want to disqualify croque monsieur/croque madam because you have to eat it with a knife and fork.

If we need a French representative, the jambon beurre is a pretty good choice. Jambon de paris, Jambon de Bayonne, good butter, optional wedge of brie.

Its the father of the Banh Mi.

amoeba,

That ham and butter on baguette really is a damn good sandwich!

I can see "Breakfast sandwich" being overrated due to its attainability. But let's be honest, it would never have sex with the average OOTer.

I understand your reasoning but I am sure there are some people like myself who make up a big batch of tomato sauce and then freezes smaller portions individually to make meal prepping for the future less time consuming. With the tomato sauce already complete, making a chicken or veal Parma sandwich is not nearly as daunting.

Not getting involved in what constitutes a sandwich.

My changes above.

I really wanted to move the hot turkey up a tier, but couldn't think of anything that was worth moving out.

I think this debate should be separate and far away from this thread. We should take a super-restrictive view of what constitutes a sandwich in this thread and then go for everything else in another thread.

For the next thread...

falafel sandwich (falafel in a pita)
fritter & roll
gyro / doner kebab
buss up shut
calzone

BLT(preferably BLTA)

this stuff gets too complicated. a BLTAJ or ALT-BJ is or LGBTJ is possibly the best sandwich in existence (on good sourdough) but a BLTA is fairly weak and a plain BLT is super weak. also if you throw an egg on a BLTAJ or ALT-BJ or LGBTJ it's an elite breakfast sandwich but a BELT is a mediocre breakfast sandwich.

your elite tier 1 is terrible though.

Elite tier one sandwiches:
Combo pork banh mi - definitely elite
Reuben - weak AF, dominated by a solid corned beef on rye with mustard and pickle on the side. when you can improve a sandwich by removing from it it can't be elite tier one
Fried shrimp po-boy - no idea what that is
BLT(preferably BLTA) - see expert discussion above
Lobster roll - definitely solid, maybe top 8, maybe not
Breakfast sandwich (egg + bacon/sausage + cheese) - solid staple but not elite tier
Italian sub - solid for sure, possibly second tier
Chicken parm - get this garbage out of here

A solid shawarma pita is definitely elite tier. As is a top notch fried chicken sandwich. Grilled chicken can also be top tier if it's correctly seasoned and teriyaki glazed and includes grilled pineapple

EDIT: steak + caramelized onions on a baguette with au jus is elite tier as well. cheese optional but generally recommended.

But man I can't believe you would put Reubens and Chicken parm in your elite tier... I didn't realize how much of a food fish you are

Stinky,

That’s why they’re Jewish deli-meat sandwiches, not Jewish deli sandwiches.

A pita is not a sandwich, idiot.

And looool at having any input in a sandwich discussion when you have never heard of a po-boy.

You may be correct about the breakfast sandwich tho.

No chicken cheesesteak on the list?
Best sandwich bracket discussion Quote
03-10-2018 , 02:54 AM
I agree that Chicken Parm should not be in that category.

a well made Miami Cuban should be tier 1, however I am guessing that a very large percentage of cuban sandwiches made outside Miami are sub-par.

it's awesome that you got combo pork bahn mi.

personally for me -> combo pork bahn mi, cuban, italian, rebuen, italian beef are firmly top 5.

a lot of these are very location dependent. how many of the medigan in this thread even know what real gabagool and mortadella is?

they are going to be commenting based off of what they ordered at subway...

Stinky: You got me strongly considering re: the Reuben. Here’s the thing tho. If I replace it, it’s prob gonna be with pastrami on rye, not corned beef on rye.

OMG: solid post

I wouldn't hate on you for that, I was just pointing out that you can improve a reuben by removing the cheese and thousand island or wahtever that nasty sauce that totally doesn't belong is.

I disagree re: pastrami vs. corned beef but I can respect that opinion

Also ED if you've never been to montreal you're not allowed to have an opinion on pastrami vs smoked meat, but I can tell you that the latter crushes the former

I have only had subway once so my input won't be influenced by that but I am obviously somewhat of a noob because I don't know some of the sandwiches. I like pastrami and corned beef sandwiches but I think corned beef has the edge. This could be a regional thing though as I have eaten a reasonable amount of corned beef in my time. Rapini is onto something in regards to being strict with defining what a sandwich comprises.

Stinky,

Pastrami vs corned beef always a tough choice. Sometimes I get The Chief from this place. So good! Or just a half pastrami/half corned beef (either both meats in one sandwich, or just one meat on each half).

We had a smoked meat place just open across the bay! I’ll check it out soon: https://augiesmontrealdeli.com

Also, thread needs pics (thx Miller’s and Yelp)!
