This is something I failed to consider, and yes, it matters!

It indeed seems clear that the original cheesesteak is made with legit cheese and therefore not the complete fail of a sandwich I've been lead to believe.

The New York Times clearly anticipated this final and started spreading nonsense propaganda to discredit the "authentic cheesesteak" decades ago in support of the New York based Reuben.

Is that bolded part what qualifies as cheesesteak, steak + cheese + long roll = cheesesteak? Is steak and cheese considered the same thing to you as cheesesteak?

Either way, the sammy in that video beats a reuben any day:

skirt steak > corned beef > boneless ribeye for sandwiches

shredded+seared cheese > melty swiss > cheez whiz

roasted red peppers > kraut > onions

ciabatta roll > rye > amoroso

btc, the article is saying what the various locals call it, and in no way extends to a description of all sandwiches that have a synonymous name.

It's sort of like "soda." It has a different meaning depending on where you are. It could be baking soda, what the midwesterns call "pop," and I hear it solely refers to syrup water that comes from a spigot in other areas. Or "Coke" can refer to Coca Cola, be generic for all types of soft drink, and so on.
