Just went through yelp to Irish pubs I’ve been to in sf:

1: Reuben
Delicious thinly sliced corned beef, thousand island dressing, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut on toasted rye bread

6: no (they do have corned beef and cabbage as an entree, and they do have other sandwiches)

I haven't been following this competition at all, but when I saw the headline for the championship, I immediate thought "I hope the Reuben is in there". Cheesesteak is a worthy competitor, but Reuben is my clear pick.

Reubens are neither authetically Jewish or Irish, but both Jewish delis and Irish pubs serve them more often than not. Some of the best Reubens I've eaten were at Jewish delis; I've also eaten a few at Irish pubs, but none have been memorable.

With respect to Russian vs. Thousand Island, I've always thought these were pretty interchangeable. Reubens are really the only context where I eat either, so I never really bothered to consider the difference.

Do you intend to try one now? Do you consider that a proper Reuben with thousand island dressing? My introduction to Reuben was with thousand island and I legit never heard of Russian dressing until this vote.

Mind I didn't learn that pesto had tree nuts in it until fairly recently. I thought the nut was cashews, lol.

I dunno, prob not. I don’t really care about the thousand island, I think the dressing is the least important part of the sandwich. But the food at Irish pubs is usually not that great. I usually get wings or a burger or maybe fish and chips. As many have pointed out itt, how good a Reuben is really comes down to how good the meat is, and I’ll go with a good Jewish deli over a good Irish pub for that.

Nothing against Irish pubs, but they’re places that have some food for people who go there to drink. Jewish delis have food for people who go there to eat.

French and Thousand Island are not interchangeable at all. A Russian Reuben(The Bolshevik?) sounds kind of disgoostin.

Poor little corned beef. Snapped up in the rye van, taken to the black site, and sauerkrauted until it starts to break. Then some swiss as positive reinforcement to keep spilling its guts, and finally Russiandressingboarded to completely break it. It's absolutely inhumane what happens to corned beef during the Reubening process.

Definitely this. If you got a mediocre/bad Reuben at an Irish pub, it wasn’t because it’s hard to make a good Reuben, it was because they use a lot of crappy pre-made ingredients in the kitchen.

You’ve got roughly three tiers of corned beef:

Tier 1) In-house/homemade: brined in your walk-in/refrigerator. This is less trouble, relatively speaking, at a restaurant than at home, since there’s usually enough space available in a walk-in, but not too many places that have a Reuben as a menu item (of the bar/pub variety) are going to be striving to produce top-quality food.

Tier 2) Pre-brined: comes brined. This tier has some variability; restaurants are going to be getting whole briskets rather than just a point or flat. IME the pre-brined whole briskets are better. Inability to control the brine, brining time, and transit time between brine and cooking means Tier 2 will never be as good as Tier 1, but you can still get a fairly good product from this category.

Tier 3) Pre-cooked: I mean, there might be something in this category that’s OK, but not AFAIK. A lot of bad Reubens are going to be bad primarily because they’re using this stuff.

Yeah, an Irish bar that takes its food seriously is going to put their effort into the stew or boxty or whatever. They're probably not going to spend a lot of time trying to make a great a Jewish-American sandwich.

Never seen a Reuben in an Irish Pub, and we go to a lot of them, since my wife plays Irish fiddle. I think the concept might just be because it has corned beef on it? Not really a thing in the South or Midwest that I've noticed.

Yeah, corned beef and cabbage is pretty stereotypical Irish fare, so if you've got that, you're almost certainly going to put a Reuben on the menu too.
