Irish people don't really eat corned beef, although they used to produce a crapload of it for export. Jewish salt-curd brisket was adopted by Irish-Americans as a substitute for bacon. That's how corned beef and the Irish became a thing in N. America.

lol nothing about the reuben is irish

it's very clear it has jewish origins even if it is the opposite of kosher (and hence can't even find it at legit jewish delis)

Voted cheese steak.

I love pastrami and corned beef. I also have a strong dislike for most sour kraut. These days I order without just to be safe. Once we get to that point I prefer mustard to thousand island/ Russian as a condiment...

I do legit love cheese steaks though. When I go visit my family in Philly the first thing I do is get a cheese steak. Hell whenever my mom goes out there she brings back a bunch of the meat and gives me a couple packs.

A good cheese steak is not low grade meat. It's thinly sliced ribeye. Anything less is merely a steak and cheese sandwich.

it's true, an authentic cheesesteak is one of the best cuts of beef combined with the worst possible cheese-style products one can find

Eh it works well together. I only go wiz when I'm drunk. Otherwise it's white American. Either way it's still delicious

It’s kinda sad how many legit Jewish delis have caved and now offer Reubens. But more not sad because it means more great Reubens!

i never order reubens at a legit deli but i wonder if some of them would intentionally give you crappier meat than if you order straight corned beef, kinda like ordering a well done steak at a legit steakhouse. i know if i ever open a deli that's what i'll do!

Haha I thought you might say that. I don't eat that **** everyday, but you better believe I'm getting some nachos everytime I go to a baseball game. Whatever processed cheese tastes good on certain types of food.

You know, there are different sects of Judaism. Some allow you to eat meat w/ milk while others do not. Some sects allow you to eat pork and shell fish.

My old employers were ultra-orthodox and probably what you'd consider "legit." You'd probably guess they were Israeli, but they were actually Persian and spoke Farsi.

I always considered a Reuben Irish. Even if it's originally Jewish (non-Kosher), the Irish are strongly associated with the sandwich in the Midwest, and thus you can excuse some people's poor understanding of the topic. Apparently, it's Irish enough that the trend reaches all of LA, where they don't even acknowledge St. Patrick's Day really.

That’s of course so 100% true. Ideally both cheese sauce and melted cheese like this great recipe: https://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/...ed-nachos.html

Here’s a fun read: https://www.saveur.com/reuben-sandwich-origin-history

And http://rowlandweb.org/reuben/pages/feature/history

And like zik, I’d never heard of anyone associating Reubens with Irish pubs until today.

The Reuben is a mish-mash of different cultures. Rye bread from Eastern Europe, sauerkraut from Germany, Irish corned beef --it's symbolic of the American melting pot.

Irish pubs no, but lots of Irish immigrants in New York who were fans of corned beef developed a taste for these sandwiches that were sold in Jewish delicatessens.

American cheese might be the worst cheese product standalone but its the best on a burger and cheesesteak.

Cheesesteak is really the burger of the entire competition.

Meh, I would only go with American for something like a Jucy Lucy where you really want the cheese to liquefy. Burger cheese doesn't need to be nor should it be full on lava.

My ideal burger is really something like the following. Its not just the meltyness of American cheese but also the saltiness. Dont get me wrong, I love burgers with cheddar or brie, or blue cheese, or swiss but when I have a strong burger craving, I have to go american.

Seriously guys. Go to Google maps, pull up Irish Bar, and find ONE that doesn't have a Reuben if they have a food menu. Even if they have nothing else, guarantee they have that and a patty melt.

Definitely not taking away from the Jewish, but I'm surprised that people would say wtf to the concept.

I checked the menus for the first 5 Irish Pubs that I could think of that I've been to, 2 out of 5 had something called a Reuben on the menu and one of the two was a bastardization
