Damn. Informative thread. Thanks Salman et al.

Decided to check youtube to see if there are any videos about how to look for them, and found this video: How to Find Bed Bugs in Hotel Rooms

JtS - thanks for the vid, that is helpful (and disgusting!)

Forgot to mention something important if you are looking to see if you have bed bugs (see below) - so to post below wanted to add:

Hm - ok let me think how I would do this - well first, if you suspect you have bed bugs, you will very likely not see a bed bug at the beginning of an infestation (they are tiny, great hiders, and noctural, so by the time you get up they are hidden in your wall, your bed frame, whatever).

So, you must be bitten. If you are one of the 50% of the population that reacts, you will get a bite that closely resembles a flea bite (people of course have different reactions, some get huge welts, but I'm talking on average here). A tell-tale bed bug bite pattern is what is referred to as "Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner" - the bed bug takes one bite, sort of shuffles along in a straight line a bit takes another bite, then a third - so 3 raised welts in a row is a good indication.

If you notice bites - now personally, I wouldn't do a search myself as it wouldn't yield much. In fact, if you move alot of stuff around, the bed bug can get woken up and just hide somewhere even more remote (like move from your bedframe to the walls).

In fact - this is why bed bug experts will not recommend you do your own self-extermination - you will do a ****ty job, and the chemicals you spray around (like a bug bomb) will serve only to drive the bed bugs into deeper hiding places like your walls, making them more difficult to eventually eradicate.

I would call a NESDCA accredited bed bug dog and professional to verify the presence of bed bugs in my home.

If you don't have one in you're area, I don't know what I'd do. Probably search around for the best bed bug exterminator in my area, and have him at it.
For home inspection (and also in hotels as noted in the vid) forgot to mention that although it is very difficult to find a live, crawling bed bug during the daytime (if you are looking to confirm whether or not they are present) - there are some tell-tale signs of bed buggery.

One is bed bug excrement - I guess they **** right after they eat for the most part (or near where they are hiding) - it is a small, ink-like black splotch/circle aka your blood in bed bug poop form. You can find these stains on headboards on beds, on lighter colored wood frames on the legs or sides, and on the mattress itself (under the sheets).

Another is the moltings of the bed bug exoskeleton - they go through several moltings in the nymph stage before becoming adults. They are translucent and in a sort of insect-like shape.

I would still not recommend (based on what I know) doing an inspection myself - but a trained bed bug exterminator will know to look for those 2 signs - and may even use them to verify the presence of bed bugs (though ideally he would find an actual egg or bed bug).

Thanks for all the info Al, although you ruined my plans tonight. Was gonna see "Horrible Bosses" with my girlfriend but I checked that site you posted and the theater we were going to had 3 posts about bed bugs in the last 2 weeks. Once I told her that, the night was over!
wtf, station benches, not on the cars. and there are better reasons than bed bugs to not use the wooden benches.

BTW - my ex-girlfriend used this service (Vikane Fumigation) in NYC, and it seemed to work well for her. It appears "Bed Bugs and Beyond" offers a variety of related bed bug services, she only used their Vikane Fumigation chambers.

Edit - ah thanks Tony P - haha I wondered what Spaceman was confused about - yah, the benches in the station, not benches in the train itself.

Oh those...yeah I think the urine saturation level probably repels any bedbugs.

Regal Union Square Cinema, July 9, 2011 - We went to a movie in theater 14 of the Regal Union Square Cinema. On the way home we noticed fresh bites all over the legs of our four-year old, who was wearing shorts. There are about 10-15 bites all over his legs - large round spots with ar red centers. They seem to be bedbug bites as they are very close together, which is supposedly how they happen. There's no question that he got these all in this theater. They have a major problem. I will not return, that's for sure.
Like this anonymous post? Who knows what happened, could just be some random paranoid person:

As soon as I stepped out of Auditorium 2, my ankle was itchy. Thought I had felt something on my legs during the movie and now I have two bed bug bites.
I lived really close to that theater when it opened up, I like it a lot sad if it goes down in the bed bug war!

Here's another movie theater I go to a lot, and this one really seems to have serious problems: http://bedbugregistry.com/location/N...260-W-23rd-St/

This is unbelievable. We went to see Bridesmaids at the Chelsea Cinema and sure enough bedbug bites on my boyfriend AGAIN. I told the manager who was very cagey about it. Two employees looked me in the eye and nodded their heads in approval of my complaint. They must know something. I made a loud announcement in the lobby and people were horrified and wouldn't enter the theater.

Hahaha - I like how she's using her boyfriend as a guinea pig - why did she go back!

My boyfriend discovered 8 bites in a line on his back after watching Hangover 2 on May 27, 2011. Going again tonight. If it happens again, I may just announce it outloud in the theater..
And yikes!

Yes - there are enough legit seeming complaints on Chelsea Cinema... I'd probably avoid it altogether... luckily Manhattan has a ton of movie theaters!

All you need to do is immediately strip down after arrival back at home and throw all your clothes into the washer on the "HOT" temperature setting. Then go have a steamy shower while all the bedbugs you were carrying drown in your scalding, metallic, Tide-filled cylinder of death.

Thanks for all the great info. Do you know which of the professionals on the list your gf used?

the ua/regal union square could be on fire and every show time would still sell out. I don't think you have to worry.

I live in an appt complex in edmonton alberta canada. Me an my girlfriend noticed bites on her first but didn't know it was bites and figured it was pimples or some kind of rash. After I started getting eaten about a month later I decided to take everything off the head board and i almost puked at what i seen!!

A whole family of bed bugs living in cracks and crevases of the head board. I imediatly threw the head board and boxspring out and the bed frame!! I contacted the landlord and we got sprayed. Yay but alas about 3 weeks later found some more bites and when my gf pulled sheets back in the morning to make the bed she found a bed bug crawling around under the covers!!!

So called the land lord again and got sprayed again. This was about 3 and 1/2 weeks ago and luckily we have seen no bites or bugs since. We have a materas cover now which we bought after the second spray and I have put tape(sticky side out) over all the bed posts and legs of my dresser.

I am almost scared to move till I know for sure, and even when I do move prob within the next couple months I am debating throwing out everything and starting over.

Good luck with your prob op they can be mentally draining, I know I had trouble getting to sleep afterward, every time I closed my eyes at night I just kept seeing the bugs.

Posting in this thread was probably more useful for OOT than trolling KevinB about his Poker Movie.

Hm - she was on the East Coast (I am in LA) - and sorry but don't recall exactly which bed bug dog service she used it was several years ago. (And wow, there are so many more services than there were when I last looked.)

If you are looking for recommendations, I would check out the below link - basically the 2p2 of bed bugs...

http://bedbugger.com/forum/

However, be warned if you should read those forums, while there's a lot of good info, there is also MASS HYSTERIA AND PARANOIA AND LOTS OF EMOTIONS... so it could just end up freaking you out unnecessarily. But you can post and get a decent rec or search the forums.

For those in LA, I highly recommend the services of Isotech and their bed bug dog and handler. (The company and their bed bug dog was also featured on a Discovery, I think, show called "Verminators")

Thanks to this thread I'm not sleeping for a week. My bed is now upside down, sheets torn off and in the wash. Frame and headboard have been taken apart. I have flashlights out, and I'm freaked the **** out.

No signs of bed bugs... just a huge ****ing mess.

I found some sort of flying bug. Wiki'd it, and am relieved to know that bedbugs don't fly so it's just an ordinary creepy crawley.

Where do they typically bite you? What does the bite look like if your allergic to them? What's it look like if you're not allergic to them?

What is the frequency of getting bit? (every night?, once a week?, ?)
Bed Bugs Quote

There are multiple different reactions your skin can have to the bite. Just depends.

I too have had a bad case of bed bugs. I got them while in Europe. First thing I do now is always check the corner of the box spring under the mattress when I get to a hotel. These pests will get on your clothes or in your suitcase and you will bring them back unknowingly.

They can be so tiny that you can't see them until they start to eat you alive and then get bigger as they fill up with your blood. Ya I know, pretty sick. So so glad I finally got rid of them. You will think you are in the clear and then out of the blue see another one in a random place or wake up with one on you. They can be very very tough to completely get rid of. They will hide in the electrical outlets and then come out at night to get there quick feed and then go back to hiding where they can go quite awhile without needing more blood. Ahhhhhh thats it I'm done even talking about these sick ****s.

had em a few years ago, we caught them early though, we placed most everything in the house in the backyard for the night (winter), now even still, my mom freezes our shoes and clothes for at least a day when we leave to go to a friends house or the theatre, sucks when I'm coming back from college too, I don't have clothes for a day except for the clothes here

if I had em' again, I'd sleep in a canapie, just get a sturdy one installed somewhere to sleep in, they're really comfortable actually, also I'm now never buying a matress unless it's right from the manufacturer

when going to hotels, I would buy a sturdy white plastic wrap (too prevent kids from soiling the matress), and don't do anything until you wrap that bed up too keep them in there, keep most of your **** in the bathroom on the counter btw, clothes and everything
