I just watched the song Revolution taped in the same sessions. It also seems a mix of live + recording. At least the vocals are live because they do extra backing vocals, and it sure seems like they're playing their instruments, but then no one is there to play the piano part, which sounds exactly like the recording.

Understandable, and my reluctance to see them as a callow youth was, in hindsight, a mistake.

I was in a little bar outside of Chillicothe when some rednecks came in, put a bunch of coins in the jukebox, and punched in some tunes and left. It wasn't until Revolution 9 started playing for the third time that someone unplugged it.

Seemingly the last US date of that tour was at the Trump casino in Atlantic City and Keef, who is a gent, disliked Trump quite a bit even at that time, so the band put a clause in their contract with the casino that the publicity could not claim any kind of connection between Trump and the Stones. Trump insisted on visiting the band backstage and Keef wasn't pleased and took out a knife and banged it down on the table. (On previous tours, when gun shops didn't demand ID, Keef was apt to acquire Colt .45s, so Trump was getting off lightly.)

In regard to Keef being a gent, look at the picture of his library at Redlands, Sussex, in that article. (It's a beautiful, thatched, moated Elizabethan manor house and Keef has lived there, pretty quietly, for over 50 years, buying up local woodlands and meadows to preserve the landscape.) And he's got a bigger library at his place in Connecticut. He also loves public libraries, and if he hadn't become a musician like his grandad, he'd have been a librarian. Mick would have been an accountant, the career he was training for till he was certain that music would pay, but Mick is also a bit of a gent, which is why, in the infamous 1967 drug bust at Redlands, he took the rap for Marianne Faithfull's stash. ('I'm an evil Stone, it won't hurt my career, but you're this pure demure chick, it would finish you.')

I think what most people forget about the Beatles, is that they recorder that whole, incredibly diverse catalog in about 7 years.

True, but the pace of change was so much faster then. Hendrix recorded all three of his studio albums (including the double album Electric Ladyland) in just two years, 1967 and 1968, during which his sound evolved from incendiary rock/blues to something almost uncategorisable, perhaps a kind of avant-grade space-rock/jazz.

Similarly another great pioneer, Captain Beefheart, went from unorthodox, quirky bluesy pop in 1966 to an all out assault on form and rationality three years later that still defies description.

Hey you've got to hide your love away is pretty surprising, I'd say. It's kinda ok for sure, but I wouldn't have expected it on most peoples' top 3 lists.

Well... he's Hendrix, y'know. There's an English Heritage 'blue plaque' for Jimi on his old London house at 23 Brook Street, Mayfair. Handel used to live next door at No.25 and when this was pointed out to Jimi he was quite pleased, but had to admit he wasn't too familiar with that cat's work. The two adjacent blue plaques for Handel and Jimi are now a tourist attraction in their own right, and Jimi's (or rather his girlfriend's) old flat, restored to its appearance in 1969 when he lived there, is part of the Handel House Museum.

Here's Jimi (and Mitch and Noel) on BBC light-entertainment show Lulu & Friends in 1969. (Lulu is the evergreen Scots pop singer who had hits with To Sir With Love and so on.) It went out live. Note particularly at about 7:08 when Jimi stops playing Hey Joe halfway through and says, 'Let's stop all this rubbish' and the band go into Cream's Sunshine of Your Love, because Jimi says he wants to pay tribute to Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton.

At the end, Jimi says, 'OK, now we're being taken off the air.' Some floor manager was making the cut-throat gesture or something. Seemingly the problem was that the producers wanted Lulu to join in the last verse of Hey Joe and, no offence to Lulu, who's great, but the band weren't having that.

Jimi got very tired of people wanting him to play "Hey Joe", as it was a cover song from his first album, and he had released two newer albums by then.
