The Beatles

No need for a catchy title or a first post explaining things. Let's make this a thread dedicated to the GOAT rock n roll band, for anything related or semi-related to them.

My favorite Beatle:

Anyone else listen to Sirius XM channel 18? Peter Asher on Sundays is one of my favorite shows.

Re: The Beatles

Iíve always ďknownĒ the Beatles. However, March 9th of this year, a couple of friends and did some LSD. At one point we laid on the floor. My buddyís wife turned on Abbey road. It absolutely slayed me. I listened to it for a couple months straight after that. It is and will always be very special to me after that night. The trip it took me on was absolutely amazing. A++++. My Beatles love story, for what itís worth.

Re: The Beatles

The Beatles channel is on 99% of the time I am in my car. GOAT band with timeless songs that I never tire of hearing. Huge thanks to my dad who is the biggest fan I know and was instrumental in my love for them.

I've seen Paul McCartney twice at Fenway Park and words cannot properly articulate the magic. Really hoping he comes around again.

I figure we will get a lot of this; not sure if you are being serious. I used to think of the Beatles as a boy band too, before I got familiar with them.

Bought 2 tickets to go see Paul in June in Lexington KY. Very happy that I was able to buy them resale for under $500 total, and they're very decent seats. I've already seen Ringo recently and it was awesome.

Favorite youtube covers of beatles songs? mine has got to be Chris Cornell doing A Day in the Life:

Re: The Beatles

I guess the most genuine way to start would be for me to ask what is it about the Beatles that you guys like? Do you enjoy the music/sound? The meaning behind the lyrics? A greater social context of their place in history? Is there an overarching theme or mission to their music that people like me aren't seeing?

All of these are good questions and if I were to dig deep into answers it would be "yes" to basically all of them. I'm sure this thread will discuss each of these topics and I'm glad you posted on the first page.

My simple answer on what I find most interesting about the Beatles is how much they evolved/changed from start to finish. It often times seems like a completely different band. Compare "Love Me Do" to "Tomorrow Never Knows", for instance. In that regard, their sound encompasses such variety. Tangentially, the fact they excel at so many variations and had such versatility, is another point of appreciation.

Re: The Beatles

My hypothesis is that those people who claim not to like the Beatles just haven't listened to enough of their stuff.

The musical breadth they covered and the level of innovation they demonstrated was unrivalled IMO, there's something for everyone in there.

Listen to Paul's voice in Why Don't We Do It In The Road compared to Yesterday, listen to those harmonies in songs like Baby's in Black and Yes it Is , the hard rock of Helter Skelter, the skiffle of Love Me Do. The sheer quality in quantity. Many of the lesser known gems you can hear in the tailend of Anthologies 2 and 3 could be masterpieces for anyone else.

Re: The Beatles

DZ, the standard narrative is that the Beatles changed pop culture and music forever when they started taking LSD and retreated into the studio in 1966?. When they came out they had made the Sgt. Pepperís album and no longer played live shows. That album (and the Beatles) is typically considered to represent the cultural upheaval that took place in America during the Vietnam War, and people relate the two things very closely.

If you give that era of the Beatles the time it deserves, the music really is quite something. More than just outside the box, Iím not sure they knew there was a box at that point. Itís creatively jaw-dropping. Beatles fans are basically in awe of the breadth and depth of their musical expression.

The best way to listen is by the album, no shuffling. These are whole works. Also, you should really smoke a joint or something first so you hear the music right.

The Beatles

Doc,

I think the Beatles are great simply due to the breadth/range of songs they have that I really enjoy hearing. Here are some Beatles songs that come to mind that I really like:

Come together
Iím down
Revolution
I saw her standing there

Blackbird
While my guitar gently weeps
Youíve got to hide your love away
With a little help from my friends

Let it be
Yesterday
Hey Jude
Here comes the sun

All you need is love
Canít buy me love

Thatís far from comprehensive and doesnít even touch on any of their post-Beatles work, but itís imo a pretty impressive set of songs with very different sounds/styles.

There is some truth they started that way, for example there is an old interview where they are joking around that its meant to be a secret that John is already married (and therefore not available for girls to fantasize about marrying themselves) but boy bands were not in this kind of homoerotic grey zone in those days so it's hard to really compare them to modern boy bands like that. Also that they started with that market and then broke out of it and grew as their fans grew and took on more fans and gained immortal status with fans from later generations should be a signal that they are special when most boy bands just get 15 minutes of fame before becoming an embarrassing memory for the people who liked them when they were tweens.

For British people it's also important that they were among the first stars singing in their own northern accent and not simply putting on what they thought of as pop friendly Americanised accent and it gives their music an honest quality.

Joe Cockerís With a little help from my friends and Nina Simone here comes the sun are two more covers I think are better than the original. Maybe Aerosmithís come together. Iím sure there are more; they have so many songs covered by so many great artists.
