Spot on. They were great in some aspects but were mostly mediocre musicians

Somebody mentioned how they are beloved by musicians and their fans etc. But Elvis was even bigger

"She's so heavy" and "Don't let me down" are their best songs. Love most of it except for early Paul songs. "A day in the life" is also top notch

I think I was about 10 when I first heard Eleanor Rigby. I remember thinking that I'd never heard anything like it before. 40 years later that still might be true.
The Beatles are untouchable, you might as well go after Shakespeare or Michelangelo.

Words from the great poet's soul, 1970. Little has changed.

Some things take so long
But how do I explain
When not too many people
Can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears
Your eyes can't hope to see
The beauty that surrounds them
Now, isn't it a pity

I never cared for the Fiona Apple cover. She seemed to reserved/stoic/unemotional in the recorded version. Perhaps that was the point. But, it didn't work for me.

I can recommend what I think is the best cover of Across the Universe.

Anyone manage to watch the whole Magical Mystery Tour movie? Had to eject after twenty minutes, it was so bad

JudgeHoldem, great story.

I do not feel the slightest need to defend nor explain my love for The Beatles. If you don't 'get it', I'm very sorry to hear that. That said, I think the trolls are pathetic.

Watching the Wheels is probably my favorite song in the post-Beatle era

Gutted we didn't see more of those latter-day live performances.

On the other hand not seeing more just raises the mystique.

I was a huge fan of The Who when I was a teen (and to a lesser extent The Stones) and never really cared for The Beatles. It wasn't until my late 20's when I met my future wife, a HUGE Beatles fan, that I came to appreciate The Beatles. There really is no argument that they were the greatest Rock & Roll band of all time. You don't have to love them or even like them, but the impact that they had is indisputable.

My youngest daughter picked up my wife's love of the Beatles and also became a big fan of Paul McCartney. When she was 19 she flew from San Diego to Philadelphia for 2 shows and was invited on stage to get her arm signed by Sir Paul. She wrapped her arm in plastic and upon arriving home she had Paul's signature tattooed on her arm. Fast forward 4 years and my wife and daughter went to see McCartney at Dodger Stadium and they both got invited on stage and my wife got Paul's autograph on her arm. Right after the show they went to a tattoo parlor and now my wife has Paul's signature tattooed on her arm as well. It is quite the conversation starter.

Well I guess if another man was going to get his signature tattooed on my wife and daughter, might as well be Paul.

The Stones, though excellent, just imitated American R&B, whereas the Beatles were their own thing. That kind of being the whole point of the Beatles.

I like the Beatles a lot and also Beatles related stuff. I agree that sometimes covers are better than originals. I really like the soundtrack from Across the Universe, and have seen the Fab Faux several times and enjoy them as well.
