My New Favorite Thing: The Sodastream! My New Favorite Thing: The Sodastream!

I don't know how I lived without this for so long.

Basically, it's just a CO2 tank, some fitted bottles, and some flavor syrup (they have A LOT of variety, from very light flavoring for "Italian soda," to pretty much any soda you can think of).

1.) The diet cola tastes exactly like Diet Coke.

2.) Having cold sparkling water available at all times is awesome.

3.) No more carrying bottles or cans from the supermarket.

4.) No more recycling 800,000,000 bottles.

5.) Probably save a few dollars, but even if it's a push, it's worth doing for 1-4.

Anyone else have one of these? I would think some of you Al Gore types would jump all over this.

At the very least, you could use the empties for urination while grinding.

Well, uh, bro, I am aware of the fact it has been around, but it went away for the most part and came back, bro, recently due to the mass hysteria surrounding some junk science recently used for political ends.

So I just thought, bro, that for those grinders plowing through ten cans of Coke a day, since they likely weren't alive in the 80's, maybe they would find this useful.

Do they say "bro" in countries where major is spelled majour?

This looks very cool. Well designed. Seems to beat plowing through 12-packs, like Rushmore says. I kicked my Diet Dr. Pepper habit a few years ago, but this could be useful for many.

i would consider this if there was a way to try it out and see how good the flavors are. i do hate the cans constantly piling up. looks like it doesn't keep cold, though, so would have to use ice which i despise.

Well, uh, bro, it was a play on the meme "cool story bro". Also, uh bro Majour is a song by Glassjaw and has nothing to with the word major which believe it or not is spelled without a u over here

No, it keeps nice and cold in the fridge. The bottles I got have stainless steel bottom and cap, and stay well-carbonated and cold in the fridge.

I can vouch for the Diet Cola flavor and the seltzer fruit flavors...they're all very good.

I understand they have everything from a passable Sprite flavor (sorry, "majour," I meant "flavour") to a Dr. Pepper.

I gotta tell you, though...I get Pellegrino with dinner a lot when I am on the wagon (one out of three months), and this is not a big stepdown when used just for cold sparkling water with a piece of lemon or lime or something.

Oh, ok, then.

Lemme get back to the 80's now, OK? This whole 2010 thing is sort of "bumming my trip."

Spoiler:

so you're making fun of him for posting something that is supposedly old, and you're using passe and overused internet clichés, and your name is taken from a ****ty hardcore band from the 90s.

This thing is damn expensive, though. You're paying north of $5 per liter of soda, counting just the carbonation tubes and flavor packets.

It's possible for human beings to drink non-carbonated liquids AFAIK.

All of that effort and it's MORE expensive? That kinda sucks.

I have no idea where you're getting this from, but it seems WAY off to me.

Please elaborate.

OP: This and my iPhone were my top 2 purchases of 2009. I don't drink soda, but I used to continually buy bottles and bottles of sparkling water from the store. Now I have an endless supply of extra-carbonated sparkling water. About 8 other friends (incl daryn!) all got sodastreams after I raved about it.

HoR: I don't drink soda, so I haven't looked into this, but you can use any syrup. Some friends use the Torani italian soda flavorings, and you can also find real soda syrup made for fountain drink machines.

MW: You get 30-40 liters of soda per CO2 cartridge, which costs about $15 to refill, so 40-50 cents per liter for that. I think the unit itself costs about $80-100, so if you were to make 4 liters a week for 2 years, that's about 20-25 cents/liter. So soda water is about 70 cents/liter. Looks like soda mix costs $5/12 liters. So the cost is something like $1 - $1.15/liter of soda depending on how much you like to carbonate it. Not sure how you got $5/liter.

HoR:

I get about 30 making water that has burn your tongue levels of carbonation. Other friends get over 40 making normal level carbonation water, but I don't think anyone really gets 60.
