Couches can sometimes be manipulated in funny ways because there is a lot of dead space in the volume enclosed by a box of the specified dimensions. The other thing: you mentioned a stairwell that I didn't use at all in this context. That definitely makes couch manipulations possible that would be extremely difficult at best if you were stuck in 2-d (basically rotate the couch so the long way goes vertical, rotate about the long axis, bring back down, etc.). Only having one long dimension is probably helpful for that sort of thing - here, with the 29" dimension constrained to be oriented along the door width, going vertical doesn't help because it doesn't present you with a third dimension that is short enough to fit in the hallway.
I'd recommend posting the question in SMP to get some different perspectives, it would not surprise me at all if there's something I'm missing here. And if you think the stairwell is a non-trivial factor, I think triumph is right that posting a diagram would be useful.
