The picture kept in spoilers features a fascinating juxtaposition of all that is good, pure and loveable in the world, and then something that in some people's minds, is basically the opposite of all of that.

I spent the last few days in SF and noticed something I don't recall in other cities.

Homeless people with pets. I saw 3 or 4 guys with dogs, including one where the dog was just chilling on his shoulders like a neck pillow. A woman with 2 cats on leashes sitting in her lap. And one dude with an iguana. Pretty interesting.

Also, a woman got shot one block from my hotel in the middle of Union Square about 30 minutes after I was in that same spot. Crazy.

Sure they weren't just rich people pretending to be homeless?
08-11-2010 , 11:31 PM
you don't own a homeless pet.

I thought this was standard? well i mean i was just thinking most people are homeless are detached from their family so they need a pet to get by, but i guess its another mouth to feed when you obviosly dont have much money.

When I was going to Cal like a million years ago, one of my roommates saw a homeless woman get enough money together to hit the market to buy food...raw hamburger which she proceeded to feed to her dog.

Have you tried the Macaroni Grill? I asked somebody for an Italian rest recommendation, he said Macaroni Grill, I wanted to give him a slap.

The Bronx has the best local places, imo.

Howard Beal once told me that he does not always trust Italian restaurant recommendations from people who were raised in places with dubious Italian credentials.

The Macaroni Grill is 10000x better than Olive Garden.

I'm dubious that someone could claim either is more than 20% better than the other. They are both ****ty ass chains.

lol. I've been searching, searching for anything remotely close to what I had back East. I grew up in New Rochelle, NY which was half Italian and worked in The Bronx with it's huge Italian population including the Belmont section and got used to Italian food at its finest. Then I moved to Phoenix and asked for, and got, the most horrible recommendations for Italian restaurants. Here's what I imagine the placement interview at the Italian chef school goes like:

'Mario, you graduated near the bottom of your class. I hardly know what to say. Veal chop stuffed w/ Swiss cheese? Manicotti w/ pepper jack? Steak pizzialo does NOT mean pizza w/ steak on top of it. Hmmmmm. We're going to send you to, let's see, ummmmm, PHOENIX! where they're likely to not know the difference! Same goes for Chinese chef school.

Now, for real, when the topic comes up, I first ask where the recommender comes from. Typical answer: Wisconsin. My answer: STFU!

Hick.

That's saying a lot. I'm never setting foot in Olive Garden, thanks for the warning.

My wife and I went to a Macaroni Grill once and were told that "they were out of bread". At least that would never (theoretically) happen at Olive Garden.

I've been to both Mac Grill and The OG a lot in the past year. (kyle loves him so average italian food, and Mac Grill has a super good happy hours- value wise) I'd say The OG is on average better. Mac Grill has been super inconsistent to me.

Unrelated: Happy birthday to me. I'm 34 today.
