+1 to Sean Carroll, although his casts are really hot and miss for me depending on the guests. He's very good at drawing our intellectual points by restating/rephrasing them in normal language rather than jargon.

Preach, brother. Im living it.

Man what a shitty week.
Im in the middle of 3 weeks of vacation and had a bunch of outdoor day trips planned the past week.

Monday I drove the family an hour and a half up the coast to hike and swim at a few places in the Point Reyes National Seashore and Tomales Bay area. Researched a few spots that are not real touristy and are fairly secluded so we were all set.
Never made it. Massive lightning storm, rain, and high winds forced us to turn around about 15 minutes from our first planned stop. Bummer. (That whole area is now burning, the Woodward fire! )

Made a snap decision to just head 40 minutes south on HW1 to Stinson Beach. Well, wind was worse, still thunder clouds, and way too many people around.
Drove another 40 minutes and finally ended up in Pacifica at a mostly empty beach. Kids got in a bit of bodyboarding before we had to leave.

On Tuesday I tried to take my older son hiking up to Little Yosemite in Sunol Regional Park. Was a beautiful day in the East Bay. Blue skies, no clouds, felt great outside. Came down the hill on 680 and immediately hit a wall of the most dense smoke Ive ever encountered. Like someone put out the sun. The hills were burning, and the road wasn't even accessible anyway with the fire burning out of control. Went back home and stayed inside for a couple days bc the air quality was godawful. The SCU Lightning Complex Fire has now burned more land than all but a handful of fires in recorded CA history, and one of the few larger fires is still burning right now (the LNU complex fire to the north)

Tried to go to Santa Cruz on Friday. Great news is the main beach was completely empty, not a soul in sight! Bad news is we wouldn't have been able to see anyone even if it was completely filled with people. Smoke was so thick that visibility was only like a hundred yards.
Didn't realize that a small fire way up in the Santa Cruz mountains had blown up into a devasting wild fire that forced the evacuation of the entire UCSC campus and thousands of residents. Where the hell are they supposed to go in the middle of a pandemic?!
Anyway ended up way down the coast where the sky was clear and the beach was mostly deserted. Felt like an ******* though for having a family outing while countless other families were literally scrambling for their lives.

Last night my brother and his family had to evacuate their home in Carmel Valley. That fire is currently burning just 3 miles from both his current place and the house that he just put an offer in on. Him, his wife, and 2 kids are now all staying with my parents until they can return home. Scary stuff, feels like the goddamn apocalypse.

Oh and more dry lightning storms on the way for the next couple days. I've read that San Diego is particularly at risk - care to guess where my other brother lives?

sounds like big basin is pretty bad. got a buddy up on two bar road in boulder creek but pretty sure he bailed already. sounds like the house my aunt build but no longer owns in bonny dunes is history

i've always been shocked we haven't had a big fire like the SCU recently. it is dry as all **** up there every year with lots of traffic.

contemplative rickroll giving angry rickroll a run for his money

codesis - that really sucks. a friend in santa cruz has been posting some nutty photos on fb, looks crazy out there.

Who here loves the combination of turkey + bacon?

I can subscribe to that.

Looks like Tuma and I may book a bet on Negreanu v. Polk HU for rollz. I've asked him to pick an OOT reg as an ombudsman.

Sufficed to say, he has already PM'd Larry to inquire about his availability.

When is the matchup happening? Haven't read anything about it.

Whose side are you on?

I really don't care for Doug.
08-23-2020 , 02:41 PM
Doug is a massive favorite iirc. Timex set odds I believe.
08-23-2020 , 02:45 PM
What are the parameters of the match?
08-23-2020 , 02:48 PM
HU 25k hands?
08-23-2020 , 02:51 PM
date of match is unclear; Negreanu is in Mexico playing an online set of tournies. He ranted about Doug on his podcast with terrence chan and adam schwartz. Doug has more direct HUNLH experience but hasn't played poker for more than a year; DN isn't an HU expert but indicates he's going to book up prior to the match, likely using a coach. I think they're playing 200 400 for some number of hands between 10,000 and 25,000. I like both. I met Danny all the way back in 2000 and he's been pleasant to me personally every time i've seen him since. I've had several exchanges with Doug via email and like him as well. I understand that Doug can come off as an arrogant attention whore and that Danny can come off as a dickhead corporate shill, but both are smart, charismatic and friendly and I think both have added significant value to the poker world.

The line puts Doug as a significant favorite. Should be fun to watch; there is clearly personal animosity between the two and both are clearly trying to get under one another's skin.

I'll leave out which side I like until betnis formally booked.

Daniel has turned into one of those little turds who lifts a few weights and loses some skinny-fat belly and all of a sudden thinks he is a tough guy. Just gotten very creepy over the last few years. He used to be very likeable, to me anyway. Now he's just a nozzle.
08-23-2020 , 03:15 PM
my initial offer was for 10k hands. we haven't booked yet, but if howard lets it extend to 25 he's some kind of gentleman.

I always like Daniel, dating back to the preboom days. Have a good story to share, but starting to get too high to want to tell it properly.

I haven't watched his blogs and followed him much, but what Ive seen from him the poker tables in the last two years, he's the same guy.

Boy this is going way back. I remember Daniel getting into pissing matches with Gary Carson on RGP while Terrence Chan was playing HUHU for $0 against Abdul so they could dissect their decisions later. (ETA: Or was Terrence playing Izmet? Damn. Now even I don't remember clearly)
08-23-2020 , 04:04 PM
Gary Carson's repeated references to Danny drunk-dialing him in the middle of the night, as well as him continually talking about how Danny was convinced that a person couldn't be an alcoholic if they stuck to beer and wine, were always an amusing bit of running commentary on RGP.
