Well that sounds suboptimal.

You're psychokinetic!

Yes, and yes!

Holy ****, HT!

And an even bigger holy ****, 27! Hopefully everything is OK and you've got insurance/money.

gunna need some pics 27...and sorry for the hassle.
08-04-2020 , 07:27 PM
Yah I'll grab a couple.
08-04-2020 , 08:57 PM
Be careful. This is the exact situation when many weekend warriors grab a chainsaw out of the garage and wind up in the ER.

No Sir, but that is damn good advice nonetheless. Hitting up insurance company tomorrow.

Main branch is probably 18" diameter. Some of it definitely hit the house too, as the wife found some pushed in wall studs in my office. Would actually love to get a decent check and just do a new addition on the back.

From back yard. GCDS was in room on right of 2nd floor:

EXTREME TREE CLOSEUP!:

From the front/side. There's an 18 incher in that mess and a mass of smaller(yet big) branches are leaning on the corner of the roof:

My office is in those windows, and **** started rumbling to where I bolted out of my seat and ran before it even finished falling. And I had told GCDS to come downstairs literally not 5 minutes before. Probably 3.

What decap said.
do NOT try to cut that tree up and remove any of it yourself. Let the insurance co send their crew out.

My experience is that tree removal is not covered by insurance unless it is on a structure, or to a lesser amount, on a driveway. YMMV, of course.

Good luck, 27! Glad everyone is safe. But it sure is a PITA to have to deal with this stuff.

Weather is a b*tch.

I heard a weird sound while sitting in our indoor porch. Turned on the news, and an F3 tornado was destroying a manufacturing company about 1/2 mile east of my house at that moment.

Hard to forget that. Google "vermeer tornado". Never take life for granted, or seriously, in my opinion.

That is good info to have going in, and yes, I'm sure it will be a huge PITA.

I also had a couple large branches on the other side of our property fall onto the neighbors yard, but amazingly missed a huge brand new fence as well as their house.

Of course this was like a red dot micro-storm from the hurricane about the size of a pea on the state map that basically ran directly over our house :/

Again YMMV, but if it does turn out that your neighbor's property was damaged by your falling tree, the neighbor's insurance will cover it--not yours. That is the way it worked here when a neighbor's tree clipped my house. And again when another of his trees took out my AC compressor several years later. *sigh*

Interesting Tom, thanks again.

Also funny, that property line between our houses is basically a row of misc huge trees running right down it. When they moved in, they put op a 6' PVC fence for their dogs, but way inside the property line to clear all the trees. When and if the talk turns to taking down some of these trees, we will probably need to look at where the actual property line is. No way we are paying for all the removal if the lot line runs right down the trees, which I think it does.

I'm a pretty friendly guy too though, would never be a dick about it or anything. We shall see I guess.

27's bane

dude, storms are scary af. living in the Midwest for many years and without a basement, I had a micro-burst or whatever it's called years back.. sounded like a freight-train approaching.

I always hear the "freight train" metaphor. It's not at all like that. It is a sound you cannot possibly describe.

But from now on, I'll know it when I hear it.
08-04-2020 , 11:46 PM
it's ineffable! you're correct

Schlitz,

For the record, the tree falling on the house <8 feet from where I was sitting sounded like a freight train rumbling through my side yard, complete with earth-shaking.

Scary stuff 27o.

I'm praising baby Jesus that no one was hurt.

Thanks buddy, you always have my back.

I don't even recall the sound of the EF-4 that visited us 15 years ago. I did know it was coming, even aside from the noise of my wife and kids running toward me at the same time, so I'm sure I heard the wind. It apparently didn't strike me as anything more than very loud wind, but perhaps I was distracted by being on top of a human pile on the floor and trying to catch a better glimpse through a window of our trees falling while waiting for the roof to come crashing down on my back. Fortunately the roof held better than the trees. I really think that over-riding thought of the possibility of my back being broken distracted me from almost everything else. Seems like a weird thought to have at that moment. It was the most exciting ten seconds of my life, but I'm fine without doing it again.

Probably sounded more like a freight train being derailed. Even a decent sized limb being cut or breaking off a tree will make the earth shake for a good distance.
