"Carcass" is a great word. I do not get to use it enough.

"Livid" is a great word. Very descriptive. You can say "furious," and people get the point that you're saying "really mad," like Steve Martin raging at the collusion between the big shots at the hot dog company and the hot dog bun company. But "livid" immediately conjures much more intense images, like George Brett charging the umpire or "**** IT, WE'LL DO IT LIVE!"

For sure! Livid is biblical.

A word my mother would use. And when she did you knew it was time to behave.

We knew Mom was at the limit when she used your middle name too.

yeah, I've never had a cashier not scan a card if I ask if they can scan one for me

If it's self checkout I just punch in random **** like 111 111 1111 or the local area code and 123 4567, pretty much never takes more than a couple random tries to get one that works

I wonder if someone has created a site that lets you input your number and then it creates a rewards account for every store in existence for you

For anyone who's unfamiliar with the reference:

"Forcibly restrained" from doing what exactly?

Got around to watching 'A Star is Born' last night. Pretty good and I think it is better than the original. Started to ponder the idea of making a list of movies better than the original.

I wrote down 'True Grit'. Unquestionably better than the original imho.

Then I got bored and decided to put it to OTT - what say you?
08-05-2021 , 03:07 PM
True Grit is a good pick.

I find that "remake" is kinda hard to define though, considering both the age of the original and domestic/foreign market films. Like, The Thing (1982) is technically a remake of The Thing From Another World (1951), but I don't really think it counts. Same with Cronenberg's The Fly. At some point, a film departs so much from the original I'm not sure how to call it. The Departed is less a remake and more of straight rip from Infernal Affairs (for the record, I do prefer The Departed).

In the spirit of good humor, I nominate Ocean's Eleven.

Everyone here just passes on the gas points? I have 50 cents off a gallon right now it’s amazing

I got roped into watching the remake of "Lolita" by a girl who was super weirdly into older man/young girl roleplay and she just loved the movie. I liked it better than the original - which is a scorching hot take I'm sure because Kubrick is GOAT - I just don't like the style/feel of old movies.

I have generally enjoyed the remakes of old Disney films quite a lot. The thing is though, I think the current trend of recycling old ideas and art is a sign of a cultural bankruptcy and I wish this trend would stop.

Agree that True Grit remake beats the original. Can’t think of many other examples.

The Vince Vaughn Psycho remake was an atrocity.

hm, I may look into this. My current daily driver only gets 11-12 mpg. I may get a costco membership just for the gas. Gas for 89 is at 4.60 right now where I live, it hurts.

Reward points too! Just used $16 in credit on my last grocery trip.

When Gus Van Sant misses, he really misses. I can't understand how anyone greenlit a shot-for-shot remake of a film.

After seeing the responses above I may have to watch the remake of True Grit again. I've only seen it once and thought it was a pretty poor endeavor.

The original IT was impossible to watch and the new one is good. I haven't seen part II yet but I'm sure it's better than the original.

John Wayne is pretty overrated and many old westerns actually suck.

I have a rewards points versus gas points issue that recently came up.

My grocery story has always done gas points. My parents let me use theirs starting when I was 16. I went out on my own gas points when I moved out and for many many years ran them up to $1+ off a gallon then filled up my tank.

My grocery store recently introduced a points system where it’s either gas discount or cash credit at the register like you said. I also recently purchased a new car with a ten gallon gas tank.

This last round I had $1.20 off a gallon with a bit less than a gallon in the tank. At the pump I saved $11 and change. But I remember a few days before the cash register at the grocery store asked me if I wanted to take $15! off my order. That’s a pretty big gap between gas credit vs rewards points.

But I love those gas points. Something about paying a dollar a gallon does it for me. So it’s an issue

Not only that, but he claimed that it was his unique interpretation of the story, which is just an absurd claim.

I love Elephant!

Can't say if I saw/knew about Vince Vaughn Psycho. Also possible I saw it 20 years ago and it has escaped me.

Agree about John Wayne.

I guess I haven’t spent a ton of time with old westerns, but High Noon and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly are both deserving of their plaudits.

Old movies suck. Being forced to watch a "classic great" suckkkkkkkkks. Also, all the dumb**** comic book movies suck too, so I'm not being biased.imo

Elephant is a trip. Gerry is a great gem. Good Will Hunting obv. I liked Last Days.

I don't think I've seen anything he's made in the past decade.

Oh yeah, the classics are definitely top notch. Sergio Leone trilogy, Once Upon A Time In The West, Wild Bunch, etc. are all great cinema.

But, I think that a lot of people forget just how many mediocre westerns were filmed in that era (due to the success of the greats). Both film and television, there's a LOT of shitty westerns.
