I am pleased to say I have no idea what my Reddit record is (definitely lower than those), but once somebody gave me Gold for a year for making them laugh.

Tomorrow my wife leaves for a week to attend a conference in Bolivia. She is staying on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Titicaca is a funny word to say.

Also, to help offset the effects of altitude (12,500 ft!) she is being encouraged to drink plenty of Bolivian Herbal Tea. Question: When she gets home will she be addicted to cocaine?
08-04-2017 , 02:22 PM
just make sure she doesn't fade into bolivian
08-04-2017 , 02:26 PM
exactly

"Herbal tea" helping with altitude sickness is probably a scam unless the specific herb that helps be identified.

Bolivian Tea

Apparently there are actual preventative drugs for it that have been demonstrated to work.

gah
my company just turned off all archiving in outlook. All emails will be removed from servers after 6 months and auto-archiving is not allowed.

So frustrating

lol, I'm going to just go ahead and guess that that is total bunk.

Just tell her to avoid that nonsense and drink lots of water, which if there is any benefit to drinking lots of Bolivian tea it is probably because of increased liquid consumption. Unless its a diaruetic in which case it could actually make the effects worse, which wouldnt be uncommon (some uneducated local folk remedy for some condition actually harming instead of helping).

If it's an issue shes worried about, im sure there are drugs backed by actual science she could take with her.

get one of those old dot matrix printers and print out every email you want to save. Maybe place it on a lathe too

last week i finally had the chance to watch two surprise horror hits from earlier this year: get out and split.

get out was pretty amazing, but split was very dumb. don't understand why some were acting like shyamalan was back to his early form.

when your last dozen movies are the worst ever, the bar is pretty low

I remember seeing a preview for that movie, and when they said "from director m night shamalamalan" most of the threater literally groaned

Skip the tea and go for that Tour de France blood doping imo.

On an unrelated note, today I paid £650 for books worth £1650. Feelsgoodman. Assuming they actually get delivered.
School books? Aren't those usually pirated and the pdf's passed around to all the cool kids?

12,500 is not that high. I used to ski almost that altitude and I never noticed any effects other than sore ass. But that might have been from falling down a lot. When it gets bad is near 14,000. It didn't bother me much when I was flying with a friend but we were only at that altitude for about half an hour. It was pretty hard on the Top Gear guys though when they took a trip to Bolivia.

W.C. Fields must have agreed with you. He worked "Lake Titicaca" into the dialogue of several of his movies, which was pretty racy for those times.

Its pretty variable and people are wildly different, even the same person can be effected differently at different times. You can get altitude sickness below 10K feet.

Altitude sickness scares me, cuz it doesn't seem to care who you are or how great a shape you are in, it can just come along and make you it's *****.

Skiing at 12,500 ft for a few Minutes and then dropping to 9,000 ft or whatever is very different than spending the whole day, and sleeping at, 12,500ft where the air much more rarefied.

Also, high andes herbal tea (coca leaf tea) absolutely works. I don't love it but some people really do. Dids, ask your wife to bring some coca leaf tea back so both of you can spend some quality time together in a drug den.

My company did the same thing very recently. The only difference is I don't care at all. If all my work emails vanished right now, I doubt I would miss anything.

I dont know if it's a personal thing or an industry thing but I am very frequently referencing emails from more than 6 months ago, so it's a huge pain in the ass.

I have to go to a funeral next week, the father of a close friend of mine and for some reason I'm experiencing a fair amount of anxiety just thinking about going. I have never had anxiety issues regarding funerals before and I can't work out why on earth I'm experiencing it now Obviously even if I remain anxious I will go anyway and just suck it up. Has anyone experienced this and have any suggestions on how to minimise it?
08-05-2017 , 03:15 AM
I don't know if this helps, but I've found my reactions to funerals have been very different to how I felt leading up to them - almost opposites. Something about being there has been very cathartic and Ive stopped trying to predict my emotions or hold them in. And I have pretty strong anxiety. I will say, funerals suck, but I've felt better after going. I'm sorry for your loss. I hope you find some peace.
