I don't get anything out of Mukbang myself, but in some ways it makes more sense then ASMR.
I remember finding it satisfying to see (rather than "watch" which would freak them out) new girlfriends eat food that I had cooked or bought for them - from the evolutionary biology perspective it makes sense that the hunter gather would be wired to enjoy providing food for his new mate. Mukbang seems to plug into that brain circuit for some people, whereas there's no obvious evolutionary reason why some people are ASMR sensitive.
I didn’t watch any of the videos but I think I get the essence of this. I’ve always found comfort when there were sounds or motions that were happening around me: a girl brushing her hair; someone using a spray bottle to clean table tops; a xerox machine or a clothes dryer running, etc.
I find this interesting but I’m not sure if what I’m describing correlates with this or not?
I'm an old and had never heard of this crap. I watched the first video with the hot sparkly woman fixing me.
The noises had what I think is the opposite of the intended effect on me. They were frustrating and anxiety producing, but then I'm not a fan of noise, nor am I a fan of trying to understand whispering.
What surprises me most is that I did feel a little tingly when she was 'touching' my face/head. So, so weird, and not necessarily enjoyable, but yes, I could feel something.
If anything, this seems a little sad/pathetic to me. Another facet of using the internet as a substitute for human interaction. Seems like a small jump to simulated sex

idk I use ASMR to fall sleep even when sleeping next to my wife. shrug.

Also old and had never heard of this till Pokimane was nominated for Ms OOT a couple of weeks ago. Turned it on and ears tingling. I think I was lucky to hit that one as a lot of it doesn't work on me either.
The OP is sceptical about this so he posted the most gimmicky junk in the OP. I'm new, but gobbo (post 32) has apparently known about this for a longer while than me so his examples might be more typical.
Or try this Ms OOT candidate who has a video of 10 of the most common triggers here. See if any of them work for you.
She generally just runs though the triggers without roleplay (she actually slips into a kind of roleplay a couple of minutes in this one but I haven't seen her do it in the others).

I would often prefer if they didn't talk. Being English I find almost any accent annoying (including almost all the English ones, see Rex Harrison).

Right. Well if you're sensitive then there might also be things you enjoy.

That doesn't seem to follow from what you wrote above where it seems you can see enough to know it's an actual thing.
Also, is gobbo really going to sleep to the sound of a pair of hands carving a soap sculpture because he lacks human interaction? Or because he hasn't worked out where to find sex on the internet?

Depends where you live obv, but over here youtube is a lot easier to get than drugs.
I would ask the sceptics if they ever listen to music and if they find it pleasurable. This is no more weird objectively than that, it's only weirder in a majoritarian sense.
I've tried having this as background to play poker and it's pretty good. The only trouble is you need to mute the poker client sounds.
the current generation of teenagers and young adults - they were born with the internet. and for many of them, the internet is their parents.
america has an epidemic of broken families. 31% of kids live in single family homes, and the ones still in tact often have both parents working.
seriously - 50% of the kids 18 and under today are literally being raised by their cell phones. they are going through their formative years in a virtual world.
there's no telling what the long term consequences of that will be. if you dive into the weirdness of twitter you can see what the freaks on the fringes are doing right now, and it's much more strange than ASMR.
this ASMR stuff is a minor symptom of the sweet cancer that is the internet.
i remember sneaking peeks of my grandpa's playboy when i was around 11, and how thrilling it was just to see tits. by 13 i had the internet, but back then, if you recall, when you looked up "sex" on yahoo.com, the findings were a bit more scarce than they are today. plus, you had to do it on the family computer.
today, the 9 year olds are locked in their room with a tablet, streaming hardcore porn. by 15, their pleasure centers are BURNED OUT.
it's like a dope fiend that needs a hit just to get back up to zero.
these kids need to have an immersive experience with a supermodel sucking on their earlobes just to bear the burden of existence.
Yea, I really do think we're in uncharted waters as it relates to all the above you mentioned, and it's hard to see how it ends well.
I recently read (or watched?) an interesting article regarding a movement among parents employed in computer industry in Silicon Valley to severely limit screen time--or in some instances not even allow their kids to have computers or cell phones--due to their fears about the effect of long-term exposure to phones/tablets/computers are having on the developing brains of children.

both steve jobs and bill gates severely limited their kids' screen time. nothing more needs to be said.
I don't let my kids have computers or TVs in their room. There are a couple of tablets they can use but they need us to put the password in. There is also a code on the TV.
Every recent generation has been in uncharted waters. My parents' generation were the first that had TV at home, we were the first to spend hours upon hours playing computer games at home - now kids have the internet. Some families established limits on the use of TV and computer games and some didn't. Don't know what studies have been done but from observation of people I knew it seems to have been worth setting limits. undoubtedly the same will apply here.
That said, while I've taken the same decision, Silicon valley parents know about as much as we do. Experts in developmental psychology etc. are probably the people to imitate (or would be if psychology didn't still have elements of pseudoscience). People who make guns don't become experts in treating bullet wounds and people who make computers aren't experts on the effects of overuse.
Yeah taking parenting lessons from San Francisco or the mega rich is kind of lol.
This stuff is intensely sensual, if not exactly sexual. Our dumb brains aren't really used to or skilled at discerning between the two. Children should be protected from adult predators exploiting them for pleasure even if it's not overtly sexual. Ppl can be lecherous even if they're not literally climaxing.
ASMR is in the ear of the beholder. The sounds in that would undoubtedly create an ASMR response in some people, though it's not originally designed for that purpose.
I think weirdness is defined exactly in a majoritarian sense. If 99 per cent of the population listens to and likes music but only one per cent enjoys ASMR videos, then the latter is weird.
More power to the people that enjoy it — it seems utterly harmless to me. But still weird.
authenticity is generally soothing. maybe some % of people feel stimulus from whispers especially - seems like a biohack. it's normal to use music as a buffer for inducing sleep....the quality of talk is astonishingly weird for some asmr....to each their own though, seems harmless.
Yeah if you guys aren't watching ASMR videos in dark room while listening through noise-cancelling headphones then of course it won't work. The point is to deprive yourself from sensory information from any source outside of the sounds. You might actually benefit by closing your eyes while listening so you don't know exactly what sounds are coming.
“We’re waging a war against obesity,” said Yoo Soon-jib, chairman of the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity, which advises the South Korean government. “Usually people just eat when they’re hungry. But when you watch these shows, it triggers a kind of hedonism.”
...
“The government does feel mokbang shows have a negative influence on the South Korean diet,” said Jeong Young-ki, who heads the government’s health-promotion division.
Mr. Jeong would like to see warnings played before certain mokbang shows, detailing how such videos can lead to obesity. “These extreme forms of eating, in a sense, are illogical,” he said.
