Meh.. I think that the sentence "DID does not exist" doesn't really mean anything. There are people who behave like Michelle. Trying to explain why they behave like that and seeing about changing how they behave seems like a good idea.

I do wonder about the eventual outcome if people named their more extreme moods. I think most people would, over time, come to think of them as somewhat distinct from the central personality. Since it seems common for these alternate personalities to express something the main one couldn't, MPD could be understood as assigning spokespersons for oneself. And if so, what would that mean for treatment? Should others refuse to address the "newcomers"?

I don't understand this at all microbob. On one hand you are suggesting the disorder could be fake and brought on by the therapist in the next bit you suggest hypnosis???

As for how to treat DID. You do not neccesarily even have to address the personalities but just target the anxiety and trauma that brought them on. I know some therapists will do integration but I really know little about that (much of the research is single case studies).

But it's definitely a really gray and blurry area when you are asking stuff like, "does she REALLY not remember what happened...or does she just CONVINCE herself she doesn't remember what happened?" If she THINKS she doesn't remember then I guess she doesn't remember.

My fiance is a nurse at a hospital and every once in awhile ends up with some mental dude or really drugged out person (or both) who walks around trying to shake everyone's hand and introducing themselves as Michael Jackson or President Clinton or something. So yeah...some people are kind of weird and it comes in varying degrees.

Anyway, back to my original point that I think consulting with another expert or two would be worthwhile. The chick has developed 4 new personalities in just the past few years and it seems really odd to me that the doctor would just be cool with that.

Ah OK. I have been following this thread but I somehow missed that.

It makes sense really, and your decision was correct. I was just posting something that was on my mind after other people had mentioned it and then answering when people quoted me. But I wouldn't want this thread to get derailed either, it's pretty sweet.
