think about me trying to figure out how i am going to toss a molotov cocktail over the bow of a navy warship approaching at 30 kts!
I dont know if I'd try that especially now that they've modified this as their new anti-pirate device.

Great Thread! I have been sailing a few times and get horribly sea sick. You say this goes away after a couple days? I cant imagine puking my guts out for 2 days straight.

How often did you come across other boats your size in the ocean ? Often or no ? If you did would you think about getting close to them or in contact with them to just chat or see some new people or no ?

actually our biggest piracy concern was enroute between panama & the galopagos & we had an encounter off of east timor, which i covered earlier.

if i really wanted too i could take charters out on my boat & make decent money. i worked on sport fishing boats for a couple of yrs before we went on the trip, did it some last summer for fun & would like to do it this summer, but i am not sure i can work it out w/ being in vegas for june. i could also drive other private boats, do deliveries or drive a charter boat.

uigea is the same here as in the states. we are basically treated the same as any other us citizen, except that as a resident of a territory we don't have the right to vote. i don't really make much playing online, i play live about 30 hrs a wk.

if you want to move here -just get on a plane. it is good for us citizens in regard to working etc.. things move at a very slow pace here.

haven't really done much sailing around here since we got back. i am over due for a new adventure & if you see me win a big tourney - you can expect a thread saying i am off.

have a few things i am considering, tourney win or no.

for most people sea sickness goes away in a day or 2, it just depends on how susceptable you are.

a couple of very close friends get violently sea sickfor 24 -36 hrs every time they go to sea. this is the same couple that hit a whale in the indian ocean & they circumnavigated at the same time we did. they then went home w/ the plan of having a baby, waiting until child reached 5 yrs old & they had taught her to ride a bike, buy a new boat & go sail around the world again & raise their daughter at sea & all over the world.

i know it is a girl because she was born around christmas time & they already have a boat picked out. as soon as sophie learns to ride a bike, they are gone again!

you could easily go 2 weeks w/ out spotting any ship or boat. spotting another sailboat was very rare.

we did keep in contact w/ other sailboats via ssb as often as possible. on many legs there would be other sailboats on the same route & we would set up a daily net where all the boats within about 1000 - 1500 nm would get on the radio, exhange positions, share weather info, tell how things were going & try to help w/ advice on fixing things on board. everyone has slightly different specialties, so getting another opinion on how to make repairs or what ever was often very useful.

dude, i am old, i went to college in '89 - so no.
Can't believe no one has asked about this yet. I believe we are on the same page here. Did you make a crapload before you shipped off? Were you worried about being caught? Did you do other recreational majigs on your journey?

Going into the trip, what did you think the odds were you wouldn't come back (i.e. die)? And looking back, what would you estimate the odds were?

no he was on a plane out the next week. he has been (still is i think) in ethiopia somewhere volunteering at an orphanage or something. we don't talk alot & just go about our business. i haven't seen him for about 2 years.

there is some - insert correct word - about buying motorcycles & exploring the us & canada, hiking the appalachain trail, or a couple other ideas .

there will be a "de captain is off to do something stupid again" thread within the next year.

interesting question.

when i was being honest w/ my self, late at night, probably 65/35 we would make it. when i was pumping myself up & telling everyone we were going 80/20.

in hind sight - true odds- 80/20 we make it.

if i go again 90/10 i make it. you have to figure what? maybe 5% you die randomly in the next year anyway?

wonder what the true odds of random death for a healthy man in his late 30's really are? anyone?

one of my deep down fears was always that we would die in some freak accident unrelated to sailing & everyone would look back & say " i knew it" or "he had no business going", " i knew he didn't know how to sail" etc.

Damn, this thread is awesome, and another life goal to add to the list. Is there any particular reason why you chose the route you did? It seems like you mostly sailed in as straight a line as possible through the southern hemisphere, if you had more time (like the 2/3 year plan you said most people did) would you have swung through the Mediterranean and sailed through Europe/North Africa, or is that just obscenely expensive compared to what you did?

essentially that is correct - the shortest distance between 2 points is a straight line. actually it is a great circle route on the face of the earth, but that is splitting hairs.

the reason we went around africa instead of through the suez & through the med was largely my belief that: no american has any business being in the middle east on holiday, let alone on a boat w/ a maximum speed of about 7 mph!

Awesome thread, thanks OP. A few questions:

1. When I (most people?) think of "sailing" I picture the spoiled kid from New England sailing around on his dad's expensive boat with a silly outfit. Is this even a remotely fair generalization of your average sailing enthusiast?

2. You said you play live poker. Is this in St. Thomas? If so, isn't it all regulars? Or do you get some cruise ship tourists?

3. Is it possible to sail the other direction (east)? When I was reading this at first I just assumed that you'd sail east, I don't know why, but in my head that's what made sense.

4. What exactly does the auto pilot do? Help with steering?

Wow. This is very interesting. Most people who study the subject say that people greatly underestimate the chances of rare events occurring. You seem to greatly over estimate these chances. That being said, I would NEVER do anything for fun where I had a 1 in 5 chance of dying. If you are being truthful, I find it incredible that you would do this journey and think your odds of survival were 65/35. I think even the most hardcore mountain climbers and free solo rock climbers put their odds of survival at better than 65/35.
