One week.

Hours vary greatly from show to show, but typically you are at the office from 10:00/10:30 until at least 6 and could be much later. Mon - Fri. When you are "on script" you don't have to be in the office, you can write from home or wherever you want for that week. Dress is whatever you want. It's a very casual setting and usually it's a very fun work environment. They also pay for your lunch which is nice, but you don't get an actual lunch hour.

Yes. That character is based on Ari Emanuel, the top agent at WME. I've never met him but I've heard he's like that in real life. Mine aren't like that; they're pretty normal but I've met some who are like that. I think since Entourage has been around some of them actually try to be like the Ari character.

How much of that week is spent at the bar?

Well, we go to the bar to go over the outline and game plan who's going to write what scenes for the first draft. Then a few days later we marry the script and read it at the bar. Then after we've gone back through it a couple times together we go back to the bar for a final read, cut/punch pass. So, a lot of time at the bar. I should start another thread called "Ask me anything about being an alcoholic."

The first time we ever had a script week we drove to Mexico and wrote it down there which was awesome. Brought our lap tops and a printer and set up an office in our hotel room which over looked the ocean and wrote the script there. We wrote a few hours a day and spent the rest of the time getting drunk and making bad decisions in Rosarito.

In general, it seems that movies can get away with being plot driven, and have weaker characters, while TV shows the opposite is true, and they depend on strong characters. Character development is one of my weaker points as a writer. Do you know of any ways to improve that, or have you always had a knack for creating strong characters? My Dad suggested researching the field of psychology, which seems a little excessive, but I'm willing to try it if it will help my writing.

And what are the latest projects you've been working on since Running Wilde ended? Sorry if you already talked about this, been a while since I read the thread.

any chance fsoyars(or anyone)could send me a script to read? I would just like to see how things are laid out/formatted really and how stuff like actions and visual gags are written on the page.

I don't have any good secrets to give you as far as writing good characters. It'd difficult and honestly something I struggle with myself. It's good though that at least you recognize its importance bc a lot of people don't. I try to base characters on people I know irl, which makes them more real, complex and developed. Also, sometimes my partner and I just sketch out all kinds of random details from a character's life and backstory that never enter the script at all. But we are just getting to know them and making them fully developed so those details will inform their actions even though they may never actually be directly brought up in the story.

After Running Wilde went down we worked on Beavis and Butthead which is coming back to MTV this fall. We're done with that now. Two weeks ago we started on a new show called Man Up which will be a new comedy for ABC this fall.

Hey fsoyars, don't mean to just pop in like this, but I'd also really like to read a script. Been following this thread for a while and it's great. It's cool if you think I'm too much of a newb, but I had that "My friend is a douchebag" thread on bbv so as you can imagine my rep is sky high round here. Kinda just wondering the same stuff as the guys. Would it be okay if I sent you my email?

The writing is all done for the first season. They will be animated and editing for a few more months though. I haven't seen any of it, but the stuff I was there for was hilarious. I think it's going to be really good and dare I say even better than the first incarnation.

Quick question – you mentioned you take little notes throughout the day when you come up with an idea. In general what would you say most of the notes are about? That is, are they mostly jokes? Or outlines for whole plots or individual scenes or character ideas or something else entirely?

Literally anything. Sometimes actual jokes, sometimes just an image, just a funny word, a vague idea for a story or character, often there are things in there that I look at later and have no idea what they mean. Most of it is worthless and probably like 1% of everything I write down I actually use but it's at least fun to scan through when I'm stuck and feeling unfunny/uncreative. Here:

is "man up," that show about cross dressers? If so, you're better than that. (thats of course me being a dikk without ever seeing the show)

you got a development deal with fx? how old are you if you dont mind me asking, and how old were you when you booked your first gig? I got people shooting my work that i talked to online, nothing big, and chances are nothing will come from it, but I like to pretend it's a small stepping stone.

Just read some of the thread... but what if any show are you working on now? Also what is your best joke or idea that was aired?
