That episode doesn't ring a bell for me either, and I watched the show somewhat regularly. Have you still never seen an episode of Fresh Prince?

Episode is called Bullets over Bel-Air. Probably one of the most impactful episodes of the show.

The episode where Will is playing pool at that sketchy bar and Uncle Phil saves the day is another impactful episode.

Did you ever go back to that shop in San Francisco?

no, never did and likely never will. I doubt it's still there, almost 40 years now. And San Francisco sounds like a veritable hellscape these days, it was glorious back then and my memories of it are all I really want to revisit now. The same goes for the other big cities I worked and especially liked: NYC, Chicago, and Boston. I remember working the infamous Combat Zone district in Boston in fall 1982, now that was wild. It's long gone now.

whats the minimum amount of money you'd have to lose to have it happen again?

eg $500k in your pocket, $20k, maybe $95 this time?

kioshk -

Thank you for posting this and being so honest about the experience, and for the follow ups.

Thanks gamboolman....

I sure wouldn't want to get shot these days, modern bullets are devastating.

Lol if it could be 1981 again and I could be 20 again, with my whole adult life ahead of me, and I knew I would survive relatively intact, I would probably volunteer to get shot for free. I'd even let them stab me a few times, what the heck. But those conditions seem rather unlikely to occur.

Did you think "Damn, I wish there were less guns in the US" or "Damn, I wish I had a gun"?

By the time you get shot in the back, I doubt you’d think having a gun was a good idea..

I've always wondered about this. If someone is robbing you, can you take the money out of your wallet and hand it to them or do they want your whole wallet?

They want the whole thing, for the credit cards and ID.

You can try and toss it and hope he doesn't get pissed and shoot you. If he turns away to get the wallet instead of shooting you, there's your chance to run away.

I always wonder if other people would live their lives over if given the chance. I would in a heartbeat, but a lot of that is regret for the way I did things.

This thread is great. I lived on Golden Gate last year and passed Powell every day. It’s a zombie apocalypse down there now, even moreso after Covid I hear.

Anyways - this guy seems so stupid for shooting you rather than just letting you go. Then again, most criminals are.

I can’t think of any good questions lately that haven’t been asked. Does the lung issue put you at greater risk w/ covid?

Would you recognize the guy who shot you?

I had really bad asthma as a kid that puts me at more risk than most people my age, still have a bad dust allergy that crops up now and then. I don't think the gunshot injury would be a factor at all.

Yeah I couldn't id him now, I'd say there was a window of 2-3 years right after that I might have but even that I'm not super confident about.

Did you ever consider releasing a rap album with your newfound street cred of getting shot?

If I could keep the knowledge I have now, oh hell yes. If I couldn't keep my knowledge, oh hell no. Now is a horrible time to grow up compared to when I grew up.

Yup, asking "Why would" when it comes to criminals is a waste of time. If you're assaulted with a gun, assume the worst outcome, because there's a good chance of it happening. That's why Greg Raymer fought back when armed criminals assaulted him.

You certainly would have been confident that you could in the immediate aftermath.

Had you died from being shot, your story would suck. It would have a moral to it though.

Would things have turned out differently if you had worked on your zig-zagging skills, or if you had a severe peanut allergy?

Do you remember anything in the 3 days you were sleeping? Any weird dreams? Did you "see the light" at any point?
