I'm not surprised at all that he stopped cold turkey and then had a few sporadic killings/rapes. It seems like it was a mental condition from childhood abuse and not some kind of addiction/scratch he had to itch.

The East Area he worked has lots of creeks and probably more woods back in those days.

I have done lots of bike riding in the area over the years. You notice that kind of thing more than when driving.

Not that it would be easy to move quickly through those places. But at night, there would be plenty of places to hide.

I really don't understand what is so shocking to the detective that he was from Auburn (which is a really small town) and not from Sacramento. It's only 35 miles away.

I live in Auburn. You say 'only 35 miles away' but one thing to keep in mind is there is a cultural divide between 'up the hill' and the Sacramento area. Auburn is in the Sierra foothills. Gold country. It's just a distinct mindset, culture, from Sac and those towns.

It would seem logical for LE to assume the guy was local to the crime scenes.

Awesome interview.

The detective was pretty adamant that DeAngelo is 100% totally faking how frail he appears in court.
Apparently he had been under surveillance for at least a week before thea arrest, and he appeared to be in perfect health - moved around like a person 20 years younger in fact.

The interview also clears up some of the misconception in this thread about how his DNA was collected and submitted to the genealogy website.

Yeah, he just retired as a big rig auto mechanic. They said he had a running bike in his bedroom and seemed to more like a 50 year old moving around.

Yeah he'd been seen working in his yard also. It was very tidy when I drove by. Nobody confined to a wheelchair was keeping a lawn looking that nice.

Well, it has been 24 hours so I guess nobody cares anymore but now the police chief from Auburn did an interview where the story changes to him not suspecting that it was DeAngelo who was outside and it changes to him finding out from his daughter the next day and not running outside to confront the prowler. So who knows, he seems senile.
