Yim has gone even further up in my estimation as a poster.

Rexx,

Spelling like MLYLT makes a poster go up in your estimation?

All I've learnt about yim in this exchange is that he spells like MLYLT and doesn't read OOT very much.

If there's more to it than that, I guess I'm the one who doesn't get it

I just found it funny but I am a little seedy so my perspective may be skewed.

OY! I'm starting to feel old and clueless, I'm totally lost as to what's going on here

I guess it has something to do with my admittedly atrocious spelling and grammar (sent/scent & attic/addict & probably more, lol)?

yim,

MLYLT is an OOT poster called MeLoveYouLongTime whose spelling is consistently atrocious. Minimalist was making a joke at her expense, pretending your bad spelling was a deliberate attempt to mimic her "style" of not understanding basic English words.

Ah, gotcha, thx

wish I could honestly claim I was mimicking her but alas, my spelling is horrible and only seems to be getting worse

always glad to contribute to the lulz when I can, even at me expense (that was deliberate)

I thought Minimalist was making a joke about the constant need to eat. Either works.

Ok please keep posting weird stuff this guy was doing. Do you think there is any possibility he stopped committing the crimes after going on psychiatric drugs? Clearly this is just another theory. Just seems very strange he stopped committing crimes suddenly. He wasn't really very old when the attacks stopped.

I find it hard to believe he just completely stopped cold turkey, but who knows. Maybe he started getting his fix on the internet? Lots of really sick and twisted **** out there for guys like him.

His last murder was just before the birth of his child. He relapsed and murdered another woman 5 years later before the birth of his third child. His wife to whom he is separated is a lawyer.

The food thing is definitely weird but he would also watch television. Some of the attacks lasted hours.

ransacker -> rapist -> murderer -> family man

Me too, he had to have had an outlet for whatever it is that drove him to do these crimes, maybe it was the internet. I suspect there are some serious crimes, even more murders or rapes but he learned not to leave DNA.

He was about 41 in 1986, so that and a family may have taken him out of action

I could of sworn I read some poem that was supposedly sent to the newspapers by him and the last line was something like but for the life of me, I cant find it, so I don't know if this is even accurate or something related to another story

The internet did not exist in any recognizable form in 1986 when he quit. Browsers didn't exist yet and internet search consisted of going through a thick telephone book sized directory of internet addresses that you could buy every few months or look through at a library. I think a 1200 baud modem was about what most people had if they had any dial-up modem capability at all.

^^Good point^^

Found the Poem:

Quote:
Excitement's Crave

All those mortal's surviving birth
Upon facing maturity,
Take inventory of their worth
To prevailing society.

Choosing values becomes a task;
Oneself must seek satisfaction.
The selected route will unmask
Character when plans take action

Accepting some work to perform
At fixed pay, but promise for more,
Is a recognized social norm,
As is decorum, seeking lore.

Achieving while others lifting
Should be cause for deserving fame.
Leisure tempts excitement seeking,
What's right and expected seems tame.

"Jessie James" has been seen by all,
And "Son of Sam" has an author.
Others now feel temptations call.
Sacramento should make an offer.

To make a movie of my life
That will pay for my planned exile.
Just now I'd like to add the wife
Of a Mafia lord to my file.

Your East Area Rapist
And deserving pest
See you in the press or on T.V.
The poem was typed on onion skin legal size paper and copies sent in to the Sacramento Bee, KVIE Channel 6, and the Mayor of Sacramento’s office, on December 11, 1977. All three copies were identical and signed by the “East Area Rapist.”

I dont know if this letter has been definitively proven to be from Earons

I agree that it seems highly unlikely he just stopped doing it. Maybe he changed his MO or saved his raping and murdering for when he was away on holidays/business in another state.

You're right that there was no internet in 1986. I was a civilian contractor working for the Air Force and Navy at the time and we used the first email of that time on a network called ARPANET, using modems at 1200 baud (9600 baud came in around this time, or perhaps in 1986 or 1987). I think AOL began a few years later (1990-92?).

When the World Wide Web made its debut around 1993, I remember buying a book which was a directory of most (all?) of the web sites at that time. I probably still have it somewhere. No such thing as Google or any way to search the web back then.

That's just 25-30 years ago, but it seems like ancient history now.

It wasn't exactly that he stopped, but rather tapered. He still made a few calls to victims in the 90s and 2000s. By '86, he was solidly middle aged.

Also, incredibly **** poem. They should have called him the doggerel rapist.

It's not as rare as one would think, several serial killers have simply stopped or else stopped for significant periods spanning years. He apparently kept up the taunting phone calls sporadically with his last thought to be in 2001 & there was unverified talk re another in 2004. I wonder if he lurked the EARONS sub on reddit or the proboards over the years.

Interesting thread here on the "Mad is the word" essay which is alleged/suspected of being from EARONS although I have no idea on its veracity. A poster claims to be the 6th grade teachers daughter & that he thought his students specific knots. She also claims her family were subjected to several odd events from the 70s to sporadically in the 90s.

Quote:
Aside from my dad's possible connection, or perhaps because of, several chilling things happened to our family over the 70's, early to mid 80's, and again in the early 90's. We would find strange objects and jewelry in our yard and house that didn't belong to anyone in the family and seemed to just mysteriously appear in plain sight. One time we found a brown paper bag with some rope and what looked like a hunting knife in the back yard. Another time, all of our wire clothesline had mysteriously disappeared. I remember this one because my dad thought I had taken it down to play with. We had very scary calls (that sounded a lot like what I heard on the podcast) that came and went over the years (until *69 became a thing), and they lasted for weeks at a time. The caller knew my mom's schedule and where she worked, or where she had been before coming home. There was a constant feeling of being watched in the house until we started closing all the blinds on a regular basis, and there were several times where we saw a figure run through our back yard. Then, there was the scariest incident that I'm not going to put into details here, and while it does not compare to what the rape and murder victims endured, it was bone-chilling nonetheless and remains a defining moment in my life and my mom's life.
Also, according to a neighbour, Deangelo was prowling around his back yard a mere three years ago before fleeing on a bicycle, just as EARONS allegedly did in some of his attacks.

Quote:
Another neighbor, Eddy Verdon, told The Washington Post that three years ago he heard someone on his property, and opened his garage door to find DeAngelo mounting a bicycle to flee.

“I stared him down, and he looked at me nervously,” Verdon said. “I never really interacted with him again. Maybe it wasn’t such a bad idea.

Strange, I was just thinking about that the other day. For those of you too young, someone (at least for a short while) actually used to print a yellow-pages-like book of websites. You'd look up the category you were interested in, and it would tell you URL(s) for companies in that space.

I don't remember how long these were published, or how often, but I do recall seeing at least one in the early days of the public internet.

I guess the reference to yellow pages is probably too dated as well.

I still remember a short news clip from the early 90s about two students in their dorm room adding websites manually to their web catalogue, something they called yahoo.
