Yeah I did once. Right on Christmas eve and worked for the busiest liquor store in the area. Don't regret it as I knew I'd be picked up elsewhere. Took me less than 2 weeks and got offered another liquor store job. Much happier there as it was the same money but far less work.

Grunching from title: I'm the master of it! I've done it perhaps up to 10 times. Never a super important job, the likes of which I've never had. And I was fired from several before most of those!

First time, I had a summer after high school job at a cannery. Literally broccoli on conveyor belt factory work. Graveyard shift. About two weeks in I just drove home on first break without word.

Then a couple years later at a casino, I was supposed to start at 10pm, and at 8:30 I called the shift manager and informed him that I would not be returning.

Most recently, on my return to Las Vegas, I resigned at Texas Station on my 5th day, and then I lasted 3 weeks at Sahara. I went in to HR and turned in my **** and wrote a letter. A couple weeks later, I got a call from one of the shifts and they wanted to know why the hell I haven't been coming in. Apparently HR didn't let them know.

My BFF has some hilarious tales of getting out of work or abandoning jobs. A few years ago he took two months off work because he told them he and I were playing baseball at the park and I smoked him in the head with a liner and he was concussed. Lol!

DD good stuff. Some great stories in here.

I’ve only had like 8 jobs my entire live and only quit one job ever. I was 17 and got a job at Macaroni Grill, shitty Italian chain washing dishes, making $7.50/hr which was good at the time.

The job was hell I’d generally work about a 10 hour shift and not get a single break. There was supposed to be four dishwashers but two would always call in. Terrible kitchen setup. I remember being soaking wet and then going outside in February in Buffalo to empty overfilled garbage cans.

Valentine’s Day was a Saturday and I worked 13.5 hours without a break and quit the next day. My brother also worked there and came in one day and all the other dishwashers called in. He worked about an hour before walking out the door as one of the line cooks was bitching about no clean pans.

That **** was one of the reason I went to college and graduated.

Question has anyone as an adult ever walked out of a job without giving notice? Seems like all these stories are all shitty high school/ college jobs, other than I guess Alobar.

I thought unless you’re in a Johnny Paycheck song you give notice.

I love all the stories so far, but I was wanting to see some of this as well. My case would be a job I've had for 15+ years.

I worked at a Nissan dealership for the most disrespectful narcissist I've ever met, who was the general manager. He would berate the staff daily, while portraying this image of a saint to the guests. Even down to throwing you under the bus in front of your customer so he could step in, save face and scold you afterward. He was threatening my job daily for a few days as i went 6-7 days in a row without a sale.

On my break I was pissed off to the point that I was shaking so I skipped lunch, walked out and never went back nor answered their calls.

I also grabbed the manager's car/house keys from the key rack in the break room and threw them on top of the roof of a neighboring business. Cause **** that guy.

My best contribution to this would be when I went overseas to teach english in Korea. I had done the research and the general understanding at the time was that it was kind of a gamble; most places offered more or less the same financial conditions, but the working conditions would vary from high class private school where you'd have a Korean speaking teacher working with you in class (ie, a school where they actually want to learn english) to a low class school where the material is garbage and there are no korean speaking teachers (ie, a glorified daycare where kids get sent so their parents can say their kids are learning english). I ended up at a place in the latter category.

When you go, you sign a 1 year contract, and I was given a room in an apartment with three fellow teachers; a married couple and another single guy, all of whom were from New Zealand. The woman in the married couple was a good teacher, the guy was less enthused about it and the owner of the school didn't like them anyways because 1) they didn't have the highly preferred North American accent, and 2) the guy had a goatee which the school owner hated.

I got along really well with them and we had some great times at the Walker Hill (including almost being thrown out for celebrating winning too much). However, once I "had it all down", they decided to terminate the contract of the guy and make me lead teacher (again, mostly due to the accent, certainly not due to my non existent skill as a teacher). So, they'd fired my best friend, I was suffering major culture shock, and the school was a dumpster fire.

I picked a long weekend and on Friday, converted all my money to USD, changed the return plane ticket I had to the next day, and did what's commonly known in the industry as a midnight run back to Canada. My fellow teachers were well aware and had no allegiance to the school so they said nothing until Tuesday morning when they showed up for work without me. The owner asked where I was, and they basically shrugged and said they hadn't seen me in a couple days.

Owners rushed to our apartment to find I was gone and my room empty, and quickly tried to set up some way of stopping me from leaving the country. They told the other teachers I'd never make it out of Korea. Of course, by this time I'm already home. I doubt they actually had any real power to do anything but who knows.

Needless to say, even though this was 2002, Korea is and will always remain on my no fly list.

How bad is a New Zealand accent? I’ve worked with a good number of Aussies. Most educated ones actually have a somewhat neutral accent, sort of Oxfordish but less pompous and sounds nothing like Crocodile Dundee.. Easily understood by North Americans and Brits. Actually this accent I kind of associate with South Africans. This is probably the accent most Asian English schools would want.

I don’t know, do you plan on still working in this industry afterwards? No reason to burn bridges, I’d give the two weeks notice, many cases they’ll tell you to pack your **** and go and you get to collect the two weeks. In many cases by just ditching them you seem to screw over your coworkers more than management or the company.

This^^ Also if it's a philosophical burden(for lack of a better word)on you about the company or individuals at that company it's better for everyone that you get that off your chest and freely express it before you part ways. I've left a gig without saying a word to anyone before when I had a lot of things I felt needed to be said and it's something I still think about occasionally many years later.

You might be surprised how little effect your walking out might have upon others.

If you are hoping to sway others to your point of view, packing up and walking out may not be the best approach.

I have left a couple of jobs over philosophical differences (but gave notice). The only people who seemed to notice my absence were people who already shared my views. YMMV.

Great stories guys. Definitely scratching a certain vicarious itch for a job that I would have LOVED to walk out on. I worked for the Cheesecake Factory for 6 ****ing years at what is apparently the second busiest
location in the world.

It was absolutely soul raping work, and I still have PTSD from it in the form of recurring serving nightmares probably twice a week. The good news is that at some point in the dreams, I'll realize that I don't work there anymore, so it has become a totem to start lucidly dreaming. So I'll quit the job on the spot, start flying around, eat food off people's plates, **** the customers, etc. Very cathartic.

So no, never quit a job on the spot in real life, but probably a few hundred times while sleeping.

Big philosophical reason like your company operates sweat shops, or small one like your boss micromanages you?

Which also meant that it was pretty easy to be a typical teenage prick with an aversion to authority, because I had no concerns about dropping the "fine, then I quit" because I could easily get some other shitty job. So all that adds ups to me having worked a long list of crap jobs.

I was always a good employee tho and a hard worker, so I wasn't one of those slackers who tried to do as little work as possible and dared you to fire me. I do feel bad about about that convenience store job quit tho, because I know that meant the person who was supposed to get off at midnight either didn't get to go home or the manager had to come in. I didn't think about that or care at the time, but like now obviously I would have sucked it up and went in and then quit when I wasnt ****ing over some other poor schlep.

How would stopping you from leaving the country work? That's a crazy reaction lol. Do they chain you to a desk and make you wear a shock collar once they've caught you?
