I'm kinda shocked they have gotten this far.

So I'm guessing they plateau after another 5 years. Then either work toward driverless or decline as an evil megacorp taking advantage of people.

Hi El Diablo,

Thanks for the link. Should I choose a competitor e.g. Lyft if I want to support a more ethical business? Or are they similarly bad too.

Drivers tend to like lyft a lot better but their customer base is much smaller.

Lyft forces you to sit in the front seat, are gender biased (they favor mustaches), and has a weird thing about fist bumping with their passengers and encouraging the drivers to add personality to their car like having guest books and writing poetry.

The front seat part is untrue but the rest is true.

To people criticizing the uber tips thing, what do you think of a restaurant owner who decides to open a strict no-tips-allowed restaurant (such as Jay Porter did with The Linkery)? This is why I feel one must agree with El D's position.. the business owner should clearly be free to establish the rules/framework for their customers to engage in business.

Also btw if you read his analysis of the issue (him having owned both a tipping and a nontipping restaurant) he explains in detail why the nontipping place is better all around. http://jayporter.com/dispatches/obse...rt-1-overview/

was listening to the bill burr podcast and uber had an ad not for riders but for drivers.
seems like can't be a great place to work if company is advertising to get new employees.

I wouldn't understand how anyone would have a problem with this. The service industry isn't different from any other worker-employee situation except for the culture of tipping that evolved. The employee agrees to be paid a certain (legal) amount to do a certain (legal) job, why would anyone care?

not to be this guy, but slavery was legal at one point so that's kind of an absurd argument to make.

I don't think slaves agreed to be slaves.

People didn't agree to be slaves to money either.

And "slavery" has entered the discussion.

The countdown to "Hitler" begins...

The point is the legality of something is a terrible argument in and of itself. Lots of horrific labor practices have been legal at some point in time.

That and Uber makes every effort to skirt the law, so double that terrible argument.

Just took uber for the first time, I think it was about 50% cheaper than a taxi from Miami to Fort Lauderdale. I tipped my driver $2 and he was insanely happy and definitely didn't expect it. I had two different drivers neither really spoke English.

I don't understand why uber doesn't just raise their rates and pay their drivers slightly more, if a driver is making $15 an hourafter depreciation he will be happy and the consumer is still probably paying 10% less than acab. With their current model I only see them crashing and burning because of greed.

Until they have issues with shortage of drivers, they have no real incentive to raise prices and pay drivers more. I've taken it tons of times, and have never experienced a driver that is not friendly - so its not like its effecting customer service either.

For as much as the drivers like to bitch about the wages, its a job that requires almost no skill and there appears to be no shortage of people that want to do it.

When in doubt, bring up slavery and end thread.

Exactly. It reminds me a lot of the Expedited Freight industry.

The entry barriers are low, the wage is still better than flipping burgers, and there are people that just enjoy doing it. Even if the hourly drops down to $15 after true operating expenses, it's still a hell of a lot better than asking if they want fries with that. I'm sure some markets are better than others, but still.

Plus there's flexibility in scheduling, so it's perfect for retirees/part-timers. Plus the experiences. I've seriously thought about buying a car just to go to the cities and drive Uber there. Think of the stories. GOLD JERRY GOLD.

Yea if you want your stories to be like "yea so i went to 3 pickups in a row and they were in the wrong address. One sent me to the wrong city. I missed surge and then my last passenger sent me through the taco bell drive thru for 15 minutes and threw up after."

Gold!

How frowned upon is the drive thru move? Wife wanted to do it last night but I didn't think it was cool to ask since I figured he would feel obligated to stop in order to get a 5 star rating. If we did ask how much would you expect as a tip?

Uber charges by the mile, not based on time? I've never used it but the drive thru sounds like great value.
