Yeah, I get that. But I don't see how the guy was inconvenienced here, I don't see what the refund is supposed to garner in goodwill. They aren't fixing a problem, it's just random free money.
People know this about Uber/Lyft and will milk the system anyway they can to get a few bucks.
Out of morbid curiosity I read the driver forums on the uberpeople website and almost daily there's drivers telling stories about being deactivated because a passenger lied in an email to get a refund. For instance real example that happened in Vegas: sociopath drunk entitled millennial leaves the club at 3am and asks the driver to stop at taco bell. Uber pays the driver 15 cents per minute to wait, but the driver does not want to wait in that 30 Minute late night line, nor does he want to risk having some drunk get his crunch wrap supreme all over his backseat. The driver declines the riders request, the rider gets pissed off and one star rates the driver. The rider uses the excuse of inappropriate driver behavior and says that the driver was intoxicated while driving. Uber automatically deactivates the driver without proof and refunds the rider their $10 ride back.
Stuff like this happens all the time. Being in Vegas, I've overheard people all the time say "Just complain about your ride and they're going to refund you. Uber is great!"
