Anyone here drive for Uber? Anyone here drive for Uber?

Lyft eats it, driver still gets paid normal.

Didn't work that way when they temporarily lowered rates for the Winter in some markets.

I haven't been to OOT for a while, but while I'm here (and since I started this thread)...

I haven't driven for Uber since the winter price cut. Did my taxes a few weeks ago, and this lousy part-time job made my once-simple tax return an incredible headache--for example, no more "free online tax prep". And my part-time jobs turned my $300 refund into a $200 tax bill.

so I read this article about working for postmates

http://www.techinsider.io/what-its-l...ourier-2015-12

it says he made $10 for going to walgreens and getting a toothbrush and shampoo

seems crazy. obviously the company gets something too, so people just paying like 100% markup for this?

Well there's a minimum fee, and then extra determined by distance/depending on what you get. The total markup would've been less if the guy got a bunch of other things at Walgreens

Seems like it's better than uber for the delivery guy overall though. Prob varies by the city. Place like SF or NY where people love getting things delivered and will pay for speed seems great.

Those are the most miserable places to have to drive around delivering things though.

I checked out the site and couldn't get a price without registering but from what I've read you pay something like $10 delivery + 5% "service" + another 20% "tip" that looks automatic.

All of that explains why charges for my Postmates orders were all over the map. Ordering a $15 rock-climbing carabiner from a nearby sporting goods store resulted in a total cost of $33.45, including a $10.75 delivery fee, a 5 percent service fee, tax and a 20 percent tip — a markup over 120 percent.

A separate Postmates order of two pizzas was $54.79, including $36.34 for the pizzas, a $7.50 delivery fee, a 5 percent service fee and my addition of a 20 percent tip; that’s 50 percent more than a pickup order. A $48.77 prime rib (when I had a really bad day) amounted to $74.05 after fees and tip, another 50 percent markup.
yikes!

Lol.

And lol at the note of the prime rib was after having a bad day.

Really doesn't seem that bad to me. For something like the pizzas, you're paying all that anyway minus the delivery fee for some places. And I assume if you ordered from Postmates, the place doesn't normally deliver (hence not ordering from them directly).

From the sporting goods store, getting a single $15 item via overnight shipping would be just as expensive (if not more) and you're getting it in an hour, not overnighted. Amazon prime now gets you stuff in an hour for $7.99+tip, so that's slightly better but you have less inventory availability.

But for sure driving around NYC would stink - but I imagine with a monthly metrocard riding the subway would work for most deliveries. I know a guy who delivers for Caviar who does it that way.

At least in Nashville, any 4 door 2009 or newer with leather seats can be Uber Select now (used to be only luxury brands). I didn't believe the Uber people when they told me (she seemed clueless about things) so I requested then immediately cancelled a few rides. There were a Mercedes and a Lexus, yes. But there were also a Prius, a VW Passat, and a Kia Soul.

I think it's a stealth way for Uber to upgrade the quality of UberX cars. At least in Nashville, you cannot choose to accept Select calls but not X. So people get newer, nicer cars to drive for Select but end up mostly driving X customers.

In NYC I'm sure the delivery guys would use a bike like most other delivery guys/couriers do. Not sure about San Fran.

San Fran and NYC both will have a mix of cars and bikes. SF biased more towards cars and NYC more towards bikes.

Haha I actually don't know how those would be classified. I know that we have I've guy with a razor scooter and he's technically in the bike category.

These classifications are more to do to carrying capacity (weight and volume) than speed or stamina. I suppose a separate category for motorized scooters may be useful for stamina differences.

UberX once picked me up in a brand new Mercedes. The back seat didn't seem any nicer than a new Toyota.

All the delivery dudes I see in NYC for Caviar, Postmates, and the like are using a bike. I sometimes see the Amazon Fresh guys walking though

Which would still be nicer than any American "luxury" car. It feels like USA#1 cars are done by finish carpenters, everything feels and look cheap even in the high end stuff.

Why is that?

The quality of the customer? You get more customers with Lyft vs uber? The tip option? The pick up/drop off locations are more convenient?

in that article if you noticed all the orders were fake.
they were placed by employees of postmate rather than actual customers so id imagine it's pretty rare someone would use it for something so small but wtf do I know ppl are idiots.

seems like using a bike or scooter would limit the scope of items you could deliver.
for instance if someone wants you to pick up food and drinks from a restaurant it's gonna be hard to deliver that on a bike and not have it slosh all over and wreck the dish.

Lyft is so much better imo from a driver's point of view.

From a rider's perspective, I tried Lyft once with a promo for two free rides and they simply charged me full price for the rides. It took three contacts with customer service to rectify the situation. So after that first impression I was done with it.

Uber's app makes mistakes in charges all the time, but their app makes it incredibly easy to let them know about those mistakes. And I've never had trouble with getting the charges corrected.

I've also heard that Uber is cheaper than Lyft, but I don't have hard evidence on that.

Quality of customers is a big one. The fact I can get tipped, the fact that lyft TRULY doesn't care what hours you work - no weekly warnings/threats of deactivation, no ridiculous hoops to jump through (I got signed up to drive in less than 48 hours and I was on the road), cool incentives, nice benefits that aren't that hard to qualify for.

The app's a little ****tier, I'll mark them off for that. They do dangle carrots on sticks in front of the drivers a lot on the guaranteed prime time hours and stuff - but the saturday/friday ones are actually pretty easy guarantees to make, even if they are a bit deceptive. $25/hr guarantee means your gross fares before lyft's 25% cut. You can tell they are really on the driver's side overall though.

One thing that sucks is the low volume. Uber is far more consistent, so I use lyft for part time cash when I miss some work or am a little strapped. (I'll never drive uber again unless I lose my job or something). It's been great for that. and did I say TIPS?? They aren't amazing but they help offset the fees a bit. I've been doing this every weekend for about 2 months now and it's been fun, I hated the entire uber experience. So if I had to pick one or two things, I'd say passenger quality and then the company itself.
