Anyone here drive for Uber? Anyone here drive for Uber?

I'm more curious whether Uber will let me do that than if I will let them.

On the off chance I lose the bags it's nothing of value other than clothes.

If you make it clear to the driver that you're tipping him a $20 cash on top of the fare plus giving him a $5 for the bellhop, I'm sure he would be cool with it.

Ya, I'm prepared to spend $100 on top of the Uber charge in cash. Figure if I call as soon as we're matched I'll be able to get it done. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't against company policy or something.

Even if it is, the driver is going to take the minimal risk for the extra cash on top of the fare.

Today I watched some fella drive up with a tanker truck, stopped and got out and pulled ahose off the truck then walk into a porta-potty. All I could think was, "that's that guys job all day everyday, thank god that's not my job." Having a job where you're guaranteed to have a <2 year old car sounds pretty sweet next to that.

Does not seem worse then other jobs that pay similar wages. Maybe be a little awkward if you end up picking someone you know?

Curious what the thread's most expensive uber / lyft rides have been.

I'll start with a probably lowish one - $117 lyft from SF to south bay at midnight

Did Uber raise their prices?

I only Uber a couple times a year, normally for a 15 minute ride to the airport it's about $16-18, this time it was $26. Ridiculous! How is that any better than a cab?

How much is a cab ride to the airport?

Anyone else encounter crazy variances in price in so-called peak periods for uber services?

Within a 15 min period the price range that was being offered went from like $22 to $28 for my trip to $45-$53 and then back to about $25 ten minutes later. Granted it was new years eve but still - haven't encountered that before and was about to catch a taxi for a fare estimated at $32 to $41 (without it going to $25 which I immediately accepted when it came up).

You guys do understand surge pricing right??? Just keep checking and then also fire up Lyft and between both of those two the price will level out usually within 15-30 minutes max. Never ever pay the surge!

I assumed everyone who used uber and lyft knew about surge pricing, but apparently not.

I finally got boned by a driver saying I was no show at the pickup point, which I was at and he didn't try to call or text. It's $5 and I'm probably too lazy to dispute it.

Last time I had that happen I had a support menu option that allowed me to just immediately get my $5 back in like 3 seconds of clicking.

I think there is some threshold to have the button tho, either $ spent over time or number of rides or something so I dont know if everyone has it but when I told someone else and looked at their app they didnt have it.

I believe you need to be Gold or higher in the rewards program.

I was drunk, cold, and standing on a corner at 1a.m. I just pulled up the other U/L app and figured I'd deal with it the next day. I have been getting a bunch of 50% rides discounts from Lyft in the past few months though so not too mad.

Is it still standard not to tip on Uber even since they added the option to the app? I drove for uber before the app had the option and I'd say less than 2% of people tipped in cash.

Largest fare I ever had was giving this elderly woman in an assisted living facility a roughly 2hr, 90 mile ride to see her family. It was $140 plus her son gave me a $20 tip when we arrived. Very nice woman we had a good conversation.

Is it just me, or with most uber drivers, except for the initial greeting and the goodbye, they won't say anything at all, but if you start the conversation they'll keep talking to you all through the ride and ask lots of semi-personal questions about your job and education and such?

i will usually tip around 10%

driver not talking until the rider initiates seems optimal

I agree, it just struck me that on all my uber rides it's either non-stop talking or not a word, usually silence cause I usually don't start the convo, which is fine because while I don't mind chatting I would probably prefer to enjoy the ride in silence.

Hopefully you don't mean true silence. I'm not a chatter with drivers and rides without music, a podcast, or talk radio news are the worst.
