That just hasn't really been the case.
Not this thread so much. But Ken Dine!!! (I always forget if that's spelt with three exclamation marks or four) did say that the Kerchers should rot in hell, which is a freakish thing to say about a murder victim's family, and he quite noticeably used to drool over 'this innocent American college gal'.
Knox groupies do fall into a certain pattern, a racist and xenophobic pattern, and, for instance, saracastically4 on Twitter really did post, '**** that prissy British bitch. Meredith deserved to bleed out slowly -- like the li'l bitch she was!' And no Knox groupie ever has a problem with that kind of thing. Doug Bremner, brother of Friends of Amanda founder Anne Bremner (Doug is that classic character, the mad psychiatrist -- he's also an anti-vaxxer, incidentally), posted that 'What the Kerchers are doing to Amanda and Raffaele is like what Hitler did to the Jews.'
And that is mad, and obviously so. And these attacks on the victim's family by Knox supporters, which have been going on for many years now, all over the place, are an obvious attempt to take a vicarious percentage part in the crime. People who support celebrity defendants in that way do not do so because they believe those defendants to be innocent, but because they know them to be guilty and they approve and admire their crimes. Like Holocaust deniers.
Everybody knows that certain celebrity defendants attract these groupies. It was the basis of an episode of The Simpsons. Milhouse's sad-sack dad got arrested on suspicion of kidnap and murder, and the women of Springfield went nuts for him, picketing the jail with placards bearing marriage proposals and yelling at his cell window, 'I love how I've... heard of you!' And that's hybristophilia. And as soon as he was cleared they all lost interest and started calling him 'loser' again.
And the reason that worked as a joke is that everybody knows it's true. But in Knox's case some people like to pretend it's unheard of and it never happens.
