The court actually stated as a finding that Knox was there that night, that she washed her hands of Meredith's blood, that she very suspiciously lied about multiple things, that there was a coverup/cleanup...and that her account of being there when Meredith died was fact. Section 9.4.1 of the court's report.
The court acquitted her because it couldn't prove the extent to which she participated in the murder. She could have watched while the other two did it, she could have been in the kitchen with her hands over her ears trying to not hear the screams, as she claimed to the police, she could have been restraining Meredith or even using the knife or done the fatal thrust.
This is a philosophical objection, but the court has given it weight. You can say exactly the same for Guede. You also cannot prove that Guede held the knife; there is no evidence that he ever stabbed Meredith, or even raped her - Meredith was pretty sexually active and Guede's account could easily be true if you give him the same benefit of the doubt that they're giving Amanda; the only physical evidence is that Guede was there well after she started bleeding out, even after she was dead.
What actually happened in group murders is generally unknown. There will often be zero DNA or fingerprints even with vicious crimes. Presence is established from knowledge, confession, accusation, etc. Ordinarily when people are provably complicit in a murder like this, they all go down, but that hasn't happened here because of the intense PR campaign. If they were all black and poor, they would all still be in jail.
