Apart from the basics of such things as humane treatment for prisoners I would like to think people are somewhat concerned about the safety of prison guards. If halfway decent food for prisoners is going to make their life easier surely it can't be a bad thing.

Actually the thing that disturbed me the most was the lights never being turned off in solitary. I think that is a form of torture, I am really light sensitive and no way I could sleep in those conditions.

This always will be the conundrum. We want prisoners to suffer. It isn't supposed to be a hotel with room service. We also want to scare the living **** out of others so they are afraid to commit crimes.

Counter this that they will enter back into society and we want them to be functional. You can't put someone in a hole for a few years, feed them rice, and expect them to go on a job interview the first day they are released.

I should have been clearer. Some states allow it but it is a total guess. Weight, sex, metabolism, etc. Defense lawyers think this is junk medicine. Obviously.

Delay, delay, delay.

If you are looking at 15 days in the slammer, you better do everything you can to avoid that outcome. I would say yes to breath test and then right at machine say you prefer urine. Then say you can't go to the bathroom. They will take you to drawing station. Look at needle and start screaming. Loud. Tell them no way are you sticking me with that. Ask them to give you water so that you can go to the bathroom.

If you are on the boarder and can buy an extra hour, it may be the difference between you having to join a prison gang and get tatted or just going about your next day like everyone else.

I was arrested for suspicion of dwi few years ago. Made the mistake of blowing on the side of the road and blew a .082. in the time it took for a tow truck to get there and to get to the station I was down to a .056.

Spent the night in jail and got charged with wreckless driving.

Seems you should probably have been able to plead guilty to that and suffer no consequences.

The police:
"Evening sir. Sorry to bother you. You actually look sober. Why don't you just blow into this little device right here and we will get you on your way in no time. And if it is close, we might let you go on since we are kind-hearted cops. Everybody drinks. Drinking isn't against the law so you have nothing to worry about."

Blows .082

"We need SWAT out here asap. We have a got a criminal on the road. And he looks violent so we better do a hard handcuff. I bet there is contraband in his car too."

heh heh. I didn't mean to pick on you. I see that a lot, and it always drives me nuts--probably have even written it myself. Thanks for having a sense of humor!

The loss of an inmate's freedom is the suffering part. For most people I think that would be quite, quite enough.

I also ended up in Jail in my early Twenties. 6 days for aggravated armed robbery, larceny, possession of stolen property, trespassing, improper storage of firearm etc., they could never prove anything and Judge dismissed charges after about 40 days in "the system". Fun times.Though my cell mate was drug dealer/murder,sleeping with him put me on edge. I actually did it but had/have no criminal record hahahahaha. Went broke at $2/5, lost more than I can remember got desperate. I got police called on me while asleep in my car in public library parking lot, oddly had no cash but about $34,000 in a motel pillow sack of jewelry, gold, silver, diamonds, gemstones in trunk. Had my Daewoo DH40 visible inbetween car armrest and seat. Cop almost shot me to death when he woke me because he said I "reached for his gun." which I never did.

I could describe jail more akin to middle school. I took a massive amount of risk to get rich in my early 20's although I do not regret it I realized I went all-in with my life and sucked out big time. Still have zero felonies on my criminal record. Finally steady job, still suck at poker though, though I realize the money is at shot taking big MTT not predatory high risk low reward cash games.

When I had to use the bathroom I put toilet paper watered on the small rectangular window and had to flush every time I defecated. Had to do it in front of my cell mate which was weird first time and normal after that. Feel exactly like I do when I win an All-In am not suppose to.

No, we don't.

At least in theory. Plenty of people do want the suffering. And they get it.

The lights never got turned off, at all. Technically "dimmed' but I mean you could still sit there and read a book with no problem.

I don't claim to have any answers. And I had these beliefs beforehand, and they're a part of why I did it. ... I don't think there can be moral justification for locking up nonviolent offenders. Jail/Prison isn't supposed to be about punishment but about, at least in theory, rehabilitation and justice.

I believe justice is a fiction in the way we mostly perceive it. Justice can only exist in the moment, it is a state of existence, not fixing a past wrong.

What primetime shows did they pick to watch?

How was it decided? Was there an actual vote?

Was there any other bathroom option than the one in the dorm room?

Were the showers individual stalls or one room?

Who in your life did you tell you were going to Jail, how did they react?

When you got in the car that night was there a moment where you thought about just getting a hotel room or sleeping somewhere at the casino to sober up? Have you reflected on that moment and why do you think you chose otherwise?

How much did your DUI end up costing you? In money.

No vote. I don't remember what primetime stuff we watched.

Nope.

In the pods, each cell had a toilet as does the main room. Privacy is in short supply.

In the pod, there was a shower in the corner that had a full-length curtain and hot water. It was pretty awesome

Dorm showers were communal, and you had to shower in your underwear. I guess because to get from the dorm to the shower you pass thru a public area and you can see into the showers but .... stupid.

When all said and done, it will be $7,000 or so, and that's before insurance rates rise. Lawyer got a 3k retainer.

How many books are there to choose from?

If I had a computer and Internet, I could do a super long time in solitary. If they added a video game player with decent games and also the ability to play online poker, you would have to pull people out of there.

I don't know about California jails but I never got any Internet, books or video games in my Massachusetts jail.

Also systems designed around punishment have it wrong. Some folks do deserve the death penalty as they never will be rehabilitated.

Expensive retainer.I had all my problems solved by getting rid of connecting evidence and my public defender was quality. Cost was just bail which my family got back. Cost me $300ish on towing to get my car out of inpound.

Turned out Manny had the same lawyer I did, but pro bono. I told him he got a good deal.

I paid my lawyer $1700 and he did next to nothing from what I can tell. He had told me I was getting 20 days but failed to notice that there was a significant increase in jail time when you refuse a blood test, so I got more. I went in to my sentencing devastated that I'd be doing nearly a month, and walked out with 3 months instead.
