Sink drains a few feet out into the woods. It's obviously not perfect, but I also don't put enough stuff down it to cause a problem (so far). If this makes sense, part of what I've learned here is that just because something isn't a good idea doesn't mean it wont work.

I'm not gonna put lipstick on it. I **** in a bucket and bury it.

That's obviously the worst, most blunt way to explain it. if you're seriously interested, this is what I'm doing.

I was explaining this today to the girl I've been hanging out with. I probably spend 10 minutes a day, on average, sitting on the can. I just figured if I was willing to be less comfortable for that, the world opened up in terms of what I could buy and where I could live.

I was broke, with no steady job at the time. I bought this place with a credit card loan. So far, it's working.

Yup, 45 minutes away. Wish they had a poker room. Turning Stone is 2 hours.

So far no. But deer, coyotes, rabbits, foxes, and so on.

The first year I moved here, I didn't see a single animal on my own land. Not one deer, even though of course I knew they were here. Seems construction and all pushed them away, but now they're definitely accustomed to me being here.

Thanks! And, you can!

Someone was asking about pictures from the original road trip. If you scroll down from the link to the blog I just posted, there's about 50 in a slideshow at the bottom.

Re: AMA living off the grid

There's a bar about eight miles from here on Seneca Lake called Two Goats Brewing. Awesome place, amazing view. I was there a month or so ago and this girl started chatting me up. We got stoned in her car and had some beers. We've been hanging out lately, and she came over yesterday for a sunset hike. We crammed half the kayak in my jeep and drove (slowly) up the street.

Firm. I like a hard mattress.

Also: Semi-lofted. I build a platform slightly larger than a standard Full mattress. The thing would probably support 2,000 pounds, directly on it, but lean on it and I'm not so sure it's steady.

Before winter, I want to build a larger, full loft, and add about 40% more space to the place.

Re: AMA living off the grid

If you spend any time looking at Tiny Home blogs, you'll quickly see they're all about being sparse and gorgeous. It's all about the image. Pinterest. ... I was emailing with someone who runs one of the sites about doing a kind of Walden, off-grid essay. They were super excited until they saw photos of my place.

Also, not selling it as all roses. Got this the other day on OKC:

Re: AMA living off the grid

Initially my plan was to look for co-working spaces, and then I realized I could use wifi at the library to work. And then I realized I get decent speeds off my phone, but not at on-peak times.

I bought a Chromebook as backup for my laptop, but now it's 95% of my daily use. And it uses much less data, I've noticed. I can surf pretty much without worrying about the 15 GB data plan. I don't stream a lot of video, and obv my torrent days are done. But I've been really surprised and grateful to realize technology has gotten to this point, where my computer needs, including work, can be covered with a cheapo laptop and a basic data plan. That's cool.

Still gotta power up the older one for Photoshop and any layout or design.

Ha, no, that's my buddy Ed, he's in LA and writes an art review zine. I owe him a short essay, actually.

You wanna see some crazy manifesto stuff, this is the guy. He reminds me of Hunter Thompson.

Honestly don't you get bored/lonely? I mean trees, and deer, and a cat, and no neighbors, seems great for vacation but seems a little too quiet/isolated after a while. I'm a city boy though.

Also re: dating... isn't it a big adjustment, the women up there in rural NY state vs. the dating pool in a big city like DC?

No, I don't get bored. Lonely, yes.

I wasn't always good at being alone. Maybe I'm still not. But something has shifted in the last year, and I often feel very peaceful and content when I'm here by myself.

Dating: Haha yeah. It's very different.

I went out with someone who doesn't believe in climate change. wtf. The dating pool is much smaller. In DC, if you lived on the other side of the city that was a long way. Preferably, let's have us both in NWDC, if not the same neighborhood. For most of the last year I dated someone who lived 45 minutes away.

Also, age differences, because of the smaller dating pool, are less of a factor.

Lots of single moms in the area also. Never dated anyone with kids before moving here.
