I glance over at the bar, Doria and the bartender are both staring at me like cats watching a baby bird that is about to fall out of the nest.

After about 30 drinks or so I somehow make it to my room, literally bouncing off one hallway wall to the other. Wake up in the morning with the worst hangover of all time, no money and a wallet full of ATM slips. FML.

Come back a year later and both Doria and the bartender still remember my name and greet me like a long lost friend!
That was your best vegas bartender memory?!?

Re: AMA about being a bartender in Las Vegas

Thread delivers.

When you are pouring for the floor waitresses, do they tip out the bar staff? Had a group of about 20 at MGM a few years back and we started the night by pre-tipping the poker room waitress a hundo as we ordered the first round (thanks for the pro tip, IRTM). Shortly thereafter, we moved to weird shooters (Mind Erasers and other sweet weirdness. Damn you SquidFace) and the waitress was often coming back with a tray of shooters stacked on top of another tray of shooters. Needless to say, she was getting much love from the group, but I wondered if the bartender who had to make rounds of 40 Kamikazes, or whatever, was seeing any of that love.

Or what are good non-night club spots where hooking up with "normal" people occasionally happens within a reasonable distance from the Strip? I'm not into the super loud/expensive nightclubs, drugs and banging dancers type of thing, but I'd appreciate tips on where to get drunk and run into people who aren't strippers/hookers etc. I guess you can find random tourists everywhere, but I mainly mean quieter places where waitresses, bartenders etc go on their off days etc.

What are your favourite bars (for whatever reason, but as a customer) in Vegas?
I'm going to have to do some research and trip reports in this area.

I'm either at the nearest VP bar or the poker room. I get off shift and go sit with whichever bartender I like best. Or, I go sit with the girls. Then Red Rock for poker. If I'm broke I sit at the sports bar. I'm at the sports bar almost every night.

We used to go to Aces and Ales a lot. That's way off the strip though on the east side (boulder hwy). Still cool if you're ever over there. micro beers. all of them. good food (on graveyard).

If you haven't been then you need to go to the double down, franks tiki room, atomic liquors...

When friends are in town I just take them down to Freemont and bounce around.

LOT'S of the girls love PT's. They all seem to spend their days off at whichever PT's is closer to their house. And buffalo wild wings. People ****ing love those for whatever reason.

Feels like a lame answer.

I am serious about reviews and trip reports though. I need to start trying to do more of that type of writing. Get a blog going. or something ****.

That game. That ****ing man and woman game. That's the only game in town. Once you start playing that...

Lines don't work. So, throw that **** out the window. Okay, most guys should forget lines. If the line is funny and meant as a joke then it can work. This one girl asked this guy how he was doing gambling. He said, "I lost all my money. Can I come to your place and do my laundry?" She thought it was so funny that they actually wound up hooking up.

For the most part though lines are dog ****. The guys who really pull are the ones who don't try. Go out with the intention of having fun. Drink, gamble, and laugh it up. If the girls see you having fun then they'll want to join in. If they don't then no PUA **** is going to change their minds.

Groups of guys tend to pull (smaller) groups of girls. The girls like to be out numbered so some selection can go on.

Guys by themselves can still pull but it's tougher. Get in good with the bartender. Chat about the game, the jackpot, restaurants, whatever. Chicks within earshot will chime in. It's a three way conversation. When the bartender gets busy it's a two way conversation... You broke the ice and you didn't even try.

I watched this one cat pull a number. He was humming some rap song. This girl is like, "OMG I love that song!" Get out of here... "No really, it's my favorite song! It's my ringtone." skeptical So, if I call you right now, your phone is gonna play 2 Chainz? "Yes, I'm serious!" What's your number?

He sees me watching and ships me a knowing glance. I nod my head. Well played young man. Well played.
Some of the best advice on this subject that I have ever read.

I don't drink often but when in Vegas I stay at a locals casino. If me and my buddy sit at the bar, start playing VP and drinking shots and say we down 5 each, would $10 tip be considered fine or would the bartenders consider us cheap? Is a buck a shot tip while playing VP enough is what I am asking

Yeah, girls tip out the bar staff. Most of them are good about it. They either tip a certain amount per hour or a percentage. Girls who take care of their bartenders get better drinks and get them faster. The cheap girls are always last in line.

Tipping your girl a bill out of the gate is ****ing strong. I'm sure she was happy and motivated to keep those shots coming!

Anyway, if you're on the floor then don't worry about the bartenders. Just take care of your girl.

A dollar per drink is fine.

If you're going to do it that way then get some ones and tip a dollar per drink as you get them. You'll get steady service and the bartender won't be worrying if you're a stiff.

I stayed downtown one time when I went to LV. Guy I worked with told me to go to this cheap slot place called "Mermaids" or something like that, tip big on the first couple drinks, then prepare to get hammered. I was playing nickel slots (and I hate slots, just wanted to get drunk), tipped $7-8 the first two drinks, and eventually had to tell the Russian girl to stop bringing them. What a weird place, all like 21yo Russian waitresses, and like half of them had their frumpy moms there seated off to the side watching everything going down. And then they try to kill you with booze, at one point I had like 3 untouched whiskeys in front of me. "More drinks, more drinks?" No, good lord.

Entertaining thread. Except for MLYLT. WOAT.

First round of drinks I always tip the amount of the check. Then $1 per drink afterwards.

Re: AMA about being a bartender in Las Vegas

Lol mermaids was amazing. Group of 7 of us walk in and get drinks. Another waitress comes up and asks if we want shots. I say no thanks for some reason. Waitress brings us our drinks and I end up ordering us 7 shots of tequila from her. Other waitress comes back somewhat perturbed that we didn't order from her, so i order 7 more.

So eventually only 4 of us take the first shot and me and my friend are forced to hammer the remaining 10. Scene missing.

Also I'm pretty sure one of us got a 4 dollar hand pay.

Yuppers. With 20 of us, it really wasn't such a huge tip, but it made a strong impression right from the get-go, and we basically monopolized her efforts for several hours.

One of the 2+2 guys mentioned that the other tables in the room were complaining that we were soaking up all the drink service. (It was also rather funny how many of the locals signed up to get in to our 1/1 game. Waiting list was epic and got longer the drunker and louder we got)

At any rate, if you're with a group of more than 10 who plan to go hard in the paint for more than a couple of rounds, passing the hat for a big pre-tip is definitely a winning strategy.

Re: AMA about being a bartender in Las Vegas

I wake up and I have to be on shift in two hours. I do the trifecta of water, aspirin, and coffee. I drink a cold beer in a hot shower while my clothes are in the dryer. Race half way across town and step behind the bar.

Bobby is there. Bobby is baller. He once bet 10k on a college football game and lost his ticket. Everybody is tripping trying to figure out where he could have left it. Eventually we pulled the mattress off the bed and there it was. "Oh yeah, I put it there so I wouldn't lose it."

He gets invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony for a restaurant on property. Some famous french chef. He's at my bar and doesn't want to go by himself. He asks my boss, Can I take him with me?

We walk out there and there's a ton of **** going. Cameras. They're doing some other presentations and promotions. They can't figure out who we are so they shuffle us off to the side. It starts. The big ceremony. The ribbon cutting. Just then Bobby yells, "Bigger PORTIONS, Guy!" and slowing ducks down behind me. The whole podium turns to look at me and I'm standing there with my dick in my hand.

My favorite, guy walks up to the bar I toss out a napkin and ask "Sir, what can I do for you?" He picks the napkin up, blows his nose on it, balls it up and tosses it at me. It bounces off my chest onto the bar. "Let me get a Corona."

Another time, this guy sits down. His ashtray is dirty so, I snatch it up, toss out the smokes, wipe it down and set it back. He takes his glasses off and sets them IN the ashtray. "Can I have a vodka cranberry, please?"

I break character, "Dude, you just put your glasses in an ashtray."

People do weird **** when they first sit down.

I've never SEEN anyone **** with a drink. I have been involved with the fallout. More times than I can count.

If a drink is in question then I just toss it. If the guest has a problem with that then I make them another free of charge.

Pharmaceuticals are a nightmare for bartenders. It took me years to figure out pills. Easy to tell when someone is drunk. Easy to tell when they're stoned or on coke. Meth is obvious. Pills though, you can tell something is up but, he's walking and talking fine...

I was about to get off grave on a Tuesday morning. I'm shooting the **** with the day shift guy when this couple comes walking by the bar. They've got double deuces of malt liquor in hand. The girl pauses and falls over backwards. She slams her head off the floor. She's out cold. My partner and I are like, "Oh, ****!" Her dude looks at us and says, "Too many Lortabs."

Lortab Tuesday is a thing for us now. Steel Reserve FTW.

Yah, take your money, put a napkin on your machine and drink. We'll look after you. I'll pull your drink to the back bar and save your seat.
