And, in regards to your example:
The guy is just basically paying for extra liquor that the waitress is stealing and pocketing the money.

People shouldn't be forced to tip because they are worried they won't receive what they paid for, or the servicer won't do their job right.

You've got this twisted.

My bosses don't want me to give anybody any drinks. They're more than content if you can enjoy your time gambling without any comps. My job is to comp you one drink after a minimum buy in and I have to make sure that you play it. If you cash out after you get your drink (without playing) then I'm supposed to charge you cash. If you don't play a certain amount (max bet/hands per hour) then I'm supposed to start charging you. When the buy in is gone then you're done. These are all standard pours with short pours (or slowed service) for people who may be drinking too much. That's my job. I do that for every guest and never expect gratuities (although they are welcomed and greatly appreciated).

There's a min/max level of service standards at every property. It's a pretty broad spectrum. We're always running short staffed so not everyone is going to get the max level of service. It's a lot easier for service staff to justify going the EXTRA mile for top tier players, heavy players, and big tippers.

In my example, the girl isn't stealing anything. She's allowed to serve long pours. She's allowed to serve shots on the side (some places). She can serve you as often as she likes (within reason) as long as the play in her section justifies it. She's also allowed to serve you the minimum. Which, I'm sure you get everywhere you go.

Re: AMA about being a bartender in Las Vegas

Great answers, thanks!

I guess I have a follow-up question re: the threesome story with the mom, daughter and friend. Where in Vegas do I go for this kind of stuff to happen? Or what are good non-night club spots where hooking up with "normal" people occasionally happens within a reasonable distance from the Strip? I'm not into the super loud/expensive nightclubs, drugs and banging dancers type of thing, but I'd appreciate tips on where to get drunk and run into people who aren't strippers/hookers etc. I guess you can find random tourists everywhere, but I mainly mean quieter places where waitresses, bartenders etc go on their off days etc.

What are your favourite bars (for whatever reason, but as a customer) in Vegas?

So when a waitress has a big tipper on the floor and wants a long pour she tells you something like "3 bud lights, one screwdriver, one Cape Cod long pour..." or similar?

Yah, pretty much. Except it's "one long pour vodka cran". Those are all out of the gun. All well liquors. Popov or whatever. If you're really George she'll ask for a long pour out of the bottle and you'll get a call brand like Absolut or Stoli.

And I will pour those heavy.

Pro tip: Ask what liquors get comped/poured out of the bottle before you order. If you drink screwdrivers ask, "What vodka do you pour out of the bottle?" Then order that by name. "Great, I'll have an Absolut screwdriver please." By law (within our comp policy) we have to serve by name.

Also, for what it's worth, the best way to get loaded is in the poker room.

Re: AMA about being a bartender in Las Vegas

Thread is delivering after a little of a slow start. Nice job.

I get tonight and there's an advertisement in the mail for a local Asian restaurant. Right at the top is the phrase "Sushi with Flair!".

I don't think theirs is as good as the story earlier in the thread.

pooptown, upper midwest. ~100k people. a place where i have the misfortune of consistently being asked for the worst drinks known to the best, both at inopportune times.

dead on a wednesday? here comes 5 rednecks wanting cherry mcgillicuddy shots with liquid ice energy drink. and hey, let's talk about why we don't carry that ****.

packed on a friday? let's get 2 vieux carres, a whiskey sour, and 4 flights of beer.

i'd imagine you've heard it all in vegas however. everyone's confident there for the first 24 hours.

He's back at the bar. His tie is all ****ed up. His hair is all ****ed. His suit coat is on crooked. My boss shoots me a look. I ask, "Are you all right?" Can I get another drink? He was drinking double scotch on the rocks earlier. I pour him another and set it down. I get a good look at him. Something happened. "Dude, what the **** happened?"

Eight hours earlier I come on shift. I step behind the bar. Immediately I notice her. She's ****ing huge. There's this big crazy sex machine. Her ass hanging way over her bar stool. I look at my boss like what the ****. He just starts laughing.

Something catches my attention and I start working. I'm working my way back to her though. I can't get there. People keep stealing my attention and I can't get to her. Eventually, I bump into my boss. What the **** is up with that? She's been coming in for a few days. With her fiance. That thing doesn't have a fiance. Nothing like that has a fiance. I don't even know what a fiance is when a piece of ass like that is in the picture.

This ***** was an alien posing as a piece of ass. A ****ing man destroyer. Totally out of element. My boss says chat her up. She's cool as ****. She is cool as ****.

I get lost some how. She's something weird. Either out of my league or just something I don't understand.

Eventually, I notice a guy is making some headway with her. He seems like money. She's been tipping. I leave them alone. It starts to get late and they roll upstairs.

"That ***** tried to kill me."

Huh?

He goes to the room with this girl. He barely gets the door shut and she's all over him. They're making out. She's grabbing his dick. She rips her shirt off. ****ing massive fake tits. Her man jumps out of the bathroom and grabs our boy from behind. The ****ing fiance. Homegirl has a syringe in her hand. A ****ing syringe. She's coming at him and he kicks her. He bends at the waist, twists, and throws the fiance onto the night stand. Okay, not the night stand. Whatever the **** you call the piece of furniture that hotel TV sits on.

He turns and bolts.

Across the hall is the stairwell and he runs down stairs.

My boss is just standing there. Just ****ing standing there looking at me like what the ****? Like it's my ****ing problem.

"Did you call the cops?"

Not yet. He pulls a smoke and flops his pack on the bar.

My boss finally moves. He gets security involved. They go to the room and everything is gone. The sheets were gone.

Fantastic, DI.

And great thread, OP! So many good stories.

I've loved the Venetian poker room for drinking because the waitresses (at least pretend to) bring liquor by name as ordered. Great tip to hear that that's the law as well.

Re: AMA about being a bartender in Las Vegas

my best Vegas bartender/cocktail waitress memory.

The Vegas Club downtown, like 10-15 years ago. I'm killing it at the craps table, up like $3-4k. Every time she (Doria? in her cute cheerleader outfit) brings me a Jack and soda I give her a green chip. Seems like I have a fresh drink every minute and an half.

I glance over at the bar, Doria and the bartender are both staring at me like cats watching a baby bird that is about to fall out of the nest.

After about 30 drinks or so I somehow make it to my room, literally bouncing off one hallway wall to the other. Wake up in the morning with the worst hangover of all time, no money and a wallet full of ATM slips. FML.

Come back a year later and both Doria and the bartender still remember my name and greet me like a long lost friend!
