Am I right to be pissed at my boss? Am I right to be pissed at my boss?

7Just want to check if I am in the right here. I work in a very hierarchical office environment for almost 4 years now. I like the job, my boss and my bosses' boss like me, and I have been given raises (like 10 pct) and a promotion (worth ard 20pct). I do my main responsibilities very well and by my own initiative have done a lot to help the whole team, doing more than the others. This is noticed, I am getting credit for it and is apreciated by management.
Now to the problem at hand: during my last performance review, which was six months ago, I got a lot of praise from my boss again and she recommended me for a raise. I had never asked for a raise or promotion ever. More recently, six months later, half the team has quit (the guys just below my boss in terms of seniority) because we are severely underpaid for our industry. So I moved from the guy with the least experience to being the second most senior on my team. Since I never heard anything about that raise that I was recommended for, I asked my boss about it, since I am training the new people and getting other new responsibilities. She basically let it slip that even better - I am recommended for promotion to senior level. She didnt say it directly because she wasnt certain that I will get it, but basically hinted strongly at it, and again a few other times more recently.
So for the past month I was expecting a raise (that I was promised 6 months ago) or even a promotion... Something... Nada... Nothing... I think the issue is that the promotion to senior requires four years of experience and I have a bit less. I know we have the budget, since the senior guys quit... So on one hand I was promised the moon anr got nothing... But on the other, my boss apprecaites my efforts and is trying to push me up the levels as fast as possible. However, I am still pissed that she even hinted at that - she knows I dont have the requited experience yet. Am I right here? I dont know if I should be mad at all (the other person in the team is here for longer and not senior yet, though I am sure she is recommended for promotion as well and will get it), or if I am not pissed off enough. How do I approach this now?

I'd fire you for making that unreadable op.

Before we bash OP too much, let us be reminded of the greatest OOT thread ever made that began under a similar scenario.

One possible way to deal with this might be to talk to your boss and ask her what's going on with your raise and promotion.

Definitely make more than 1 thread about it

Your boss sounds kind of dumb for hinting at something like that to you. It sounds like this organization sucks overall based upon what you say. I'd be annoyed by it all. The solution is to talk to your boss. And use some space breaks to make your OP more readable. Write better at work too.

Send long, rambling emails without paragraph breaks to your boss. That will make you look worthy of promotion.

I struggle to understand why you are pissed off. Because you don't have the promotion you deserve, or because you were promised one....

And.... to be pissed- off at the boss is childish. You should either learn to manage-up better or leave, if she is really so bad.

No, you are not right to be pissed off at your boss.

You're also not right to have stayed at the company after you found out that you're being underpaid.

I thought your thread was the greatest thread.

Just because you’re recommended for a promotion doesn’t mean it’ll always go through.

So you're complaining that you weren't fired because you are slightly underpaid and the promised promotion didn't come through ahead of schedule?

Both, more for the latter. I am pissed of because:
6 months ago: My boss: "Amazing job! I am recommending you for a 10% raise"
5 months ago: Senior colleague leaves
2 months ago: The other senior colleague leaves
1.5 months ago: My boss: "Hey, you know, you will be taking over their responsibilities"
1 month ago: Me: "So, am I getting that 10% raise or what?" My boss: "Even better! We are recommending that you are promoted to senior level!"
Now: Crickets.... and the year has started, our budget was approved, etc...

Are you working more hours with the new responsibilities?

No, same hours. But I'am training the new staff and watching that they don't blow the building.

Given your track record I'd think scheduling a meeting to find out more about your future w/the company would only be a good thing?

Neil S is correct. Find another job. You know you're underpaid, so go get paid the proper amount.
