You spend almost as much money on staples as you should on food.

just had my first experience at an ALDI. its located in a pretty ghetto area and there was like 2 people working in the entire store.
i loved that they had european dark chocolate for a very decent price. coffee selection was very cheap and it was actually sold in whole pounds unlike most grocercy stores which are just like 9 or 11 oz.

the store wasnt busy at all and there was like 7 people filling out job applications at the front.

An Aldi's store is opening in the town that I work for in a couple of weeks. As a bribe/thank you they gave all of us all a bag of groceries. In Mass we can legally accept gifts less than $50. When we looked at it we all said no way is this less than $50 but they included the sales slip and it was $24 and change.

From memory, it had a bag of tortilla chips, a large jar of salsa, a jar of jalepena dip, a can of cashews, a box of chocolate covered cookies, a box of microwave popcorn, a box of fruit bars, a liter of lemonade, a box of frosted shredded wheat cereal, a package of dried fruit and the reusable cloth grocery bag.

Oh, their business model is to locate near a "regular" food store because they want you to able to buy all the discount items from them and then be able to conveniently shoot over to your regular store to get the other stuff.

Winco does indeed ****ing rule. The bulk food section is awesome. Skip the deli foods though.

Back in the day stores were named with the possessive. Woolworth's, Walgreen's, Kresge's. So if the tradition holds over in people's minds, so what. Get the ****ing sand out of your vaginas about it.

Also surprised no midwestern Cub Foods fans ever represented ITT.

Where is this picture from? I remember back in the 50's in Worcester we had a Woolworth's and Kregse's side by side just like that on Main Street.

Sounds like your cats are spending too much time on 2p2. Tell them to turn off their computers and go for a walk outside, kill some birds, something healthy.

LOL. They will bring you dead birds and rodents and leave then at the front door.

I have shopped there a few times I wasn't too impressed with it. The food is cheap but most of it is really cheap generic ****.

If you are a broke college kid it's not to bad since most of the food is close the price of Ramen noodles.

I like http://www.priceritesupermarkets.com/
better. They are also a discount supermarket as well but the have a bigger selection of name brand foods than ALDI's.

cheap and generic ***? What food did you buy there? What were your complaints?

I am hooked on their $1 frozen chicken cordon bleus. It's raw and you have to put it in the oven -- great value and so good. (I eat them with dijon mustard)

This is just not true.

There is some cheap crap in ALDI, yes, but there is a ton of really good stuff at a great price.

My mom likes ALDI's and I've been there with her a few times. Seems pretty cool. Had a couple friends who would shop there a lot because they were struggling for cash. They said it was good for them, and they made sausages for a bunch of us one day and they seemed fine. Not sure I go out of my way to go there but it's definitely a good value store.

ALDI and LIDL have been great in the UK retail market as they have really moved the bar up on cheap.

Before these stores existed, the quality of "value" propositions in supermarkets was utterly terrible. Supermarkets had value brands with their own labels that basically said yeah its cheap, yea its crap, but wtf do you expect pooors?

Now they cant pull this **** and basically you get more for your monies.

Given the problems with British food culture have always been at the lower rungs, this is an excellent development. Fine dining in the UK, a good experience with plenty of choice, anything else, its going to be an Indian or you are SOL.

ALDI is a decent option, especially in my area, rural. The one I know a bit changed from cash only to accepting credit also maybe 18 months ago. I believe my wife was going there today to pick up some things.

We don't have Aldi's in my neck of NorCal, but I understand they own Trader Joe's. Which is ****ing awesome.

I remember going there in college a few times when times were tight and there was a certain staleness to everything. You had to put a quarter in the shopping cart which you got back when you put it back in the corral, like they had a real problem with people stealing them. The cashiers were def the fastest id ever seen, robots would struggle to compete with them for sure.

Still, I can never go back. I feel like if you go as an adult you’re admitting defeat, might as well go professional beggar/alcoholic at that point.
