Signing a lease tomorrow.

EDIT: This was a joke because I have a thing for Asian girls.

Sapo,

Congrats! Yeah, Portland is super white for sure. As for cocktails, it has plenty of both the old school version and the $15 artisan/classic version, except they are usually more like $10 instead of $15.

El D,

Sorry for the confusion, jokes gone wrong - I may soon move out here but I'm not signing a lease tomorrow. As for cocktails, I guess I just don't see that word labeled on dives on the east coast, but I definitely see it on crappy bars on the west coast. Anyone else know what I'm talking about? Could just be me.

Going to Sizzle Pie now.

It could be either. If the bar opens before 7am and advertises cocktails, it's a dive for day drinking. Come as you are and start with hair of the dog.

7 am drinkers don't need hair of the dog. It's just the next drink.

This thread is now in the category of things that shouldn't piss me off but do. I've read all of it because I've lived in OR and WA the majority of my life, but tilts me to read what is important to people when choosing where to live.

Big: what kind of stuff tilts you?

Sapo: I feel like divey old-timer bars all over have the word cocktails on a ****ty sign or in neon.

It tilts me that people factor in how near a creek or a hill to climb is. And "neighborhood vibes".

And more recently, that a bearded white guy that likes beer thinks there are too many like minded individuals, and he's concerned that he won't get enough variety.

Again, shouldn't piss me off but does, because I would not consider any of those things when deciding where to live.

My initial reaction was really defensive, but actually I guess I understand. If someone started a thread about moving to DC and then it got really specific about how Cleveland Park was too X and H St was too Y but Anacostia too Z, I'd get irritated also. I've been in the city for many years and seen the changes and learned my way around by feeling it out. It's not a formula or perfect.

But moving is a big scary deal, so it does help to think all this stuff through.

My theory is that it's not everywhere, but far more prevalent on the west coast. However, I can't prove this and it could just be observation bias.

Its weird to me to consider anything beyond: can I afford it, can I make a living in the area, is it safe, will I be bored out of my tits?

You don't care at all about what sort of community you're living in? That almost seems stranger than being pissed off at the people who do.

Go to north Seattle. You will love it. Get a Cuban sammich at Paseo in Fremont :-)

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but I heard Paseo abruptly went out of business. GOAT sandwiches. The prawn one was amazing. I lived within walking distance of the one in Fremont for a while.

Yes, it is true. Sad. I only went once (I am from Vancouver BC), but I will never forget it. I had the Cuban Roast, and my wife had the Scallop. GOAT sandwiches.

If Pike Street Fish Fry ever closes, I would be crushed.

According to Portland Mayor Charlie Hales, the city's main concern is public health and safety.

"Beyond that, though, is the issue of fairness," Hales said. "Taxi cab companies follow rules on public health and safety. So do hotels and restaurants and construction companies and scores of other service providers. Because everyone agrees: good regulations make for a safer community. Uber disagrees, so we're seeking a court injunction."
The comment about restaurants and hotels is telling since food trucks and Air BnB both operate in Portland, and food trucks famously so.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — As Portland City County looks to change bylaws that would allow people to legally use their homes as short term and vacation rentals through online venues such as Airbnb, hundreds of residents are already doing it.

Wednesday, council discussed a motion to allow apartment and condominium dwellers to rent through Airbnb at a raucous public hearing, while earlier this year, council amended bylaws to allow residents living in houses the right to short-term rentals through Airbnb and similar sites.

Some people who attended the public hearing expressed concern current rules are being ignored, and that new laws would be too. Out of more than 1600 Airbnb listings in Portland, only 73 applications have been filled out.

Hundreds of postings for Portland apartments and condominiums are advertised currently on Airbnb, although doing so has not been legalized yet, as an official vote on the bylaw, amended with several small changes, continues through to Dec. 3.

Enforcement of the permissions, both current and pending, remains a question.
Vote may have been pushed to the 18th.

odd question but being mostly from rural virginia and kansas I dont really understand why there is this huge area along northern california and southern oregon that tkes up several hundred miles where there are like no people. Why arent there any big cities between portland and san fransisco? it just seems odd.

What do you think is there that would attract people to live in a big city?

This kind of thing belongs in the "things I was embarrassed to find out" or whatever thread. I was an adult when I had a thought, "wow, there is a sizable body of water/river near most major cities". Not a coincidence, I came to realize.

There are only a couple large natural harbors, one at Eureka and one at Coos Bay/North Bend. There are no rivers navigable by large ocean going freighters. The boom and bust cycles of timber and gold rushes have sent young people off to the cities (Portland and San Francisco mostly) to make a living.

San Francisco sits at the mouth of a giant bay + near big gold strikes.

San Diego has a big harbor + the border.

LA has a huge natural harbor + oil. It would be a decent sized city even without the entertainment biz. But once the early movie makers started fleeing patent violation lawsuits it really took off.

The Inland Empire cities are mostly near big oil strikes or gold strikes.
