You're right, this is true. It is from a 3rd party perspective.

Perhaps I should clarify, and correct me if I am wrong please.

What I thought was that we are seeing what he remembers as he would be telling it (to his sister/friends).

Regardless, at no point do we see what Summer is thinking wrt Tom. It is at least partially one sided if not through his eyes. Though the significance of this can be negligible I suppose.

Edit: I guess I didn't address your point entirely though. It is contrived. What I was trying to say is that it's contrived for a reason, and that without it, the story as a whole doesn't function the same way. You're right though.

I had never even heard about this movie until Minka Kelly was on Craig Ferguson tonight. I think I'm going to have to go check it out.

Ooof! I mean really. That was like the most violent gut punch of a piece of dialogue I've ever heard. Hits brutally hard if you have any experience with a girl like that.
that was pure pain when she said that, but it also went to show how she really is. I don't think that she was necessarily happy with the guy that she married, but that she let her guard down a ton with Tom and she didn't like that she had done that, or the range of emotions that can come with that. I got the feeling that she was gonna do something drastic with the next guy regardless so that she could keep them at a relative distance like she had done consistently with every guy before(and even with tom)

I wouldn't really say that its that much like Garden State. I can see some possible comparisons, but its dealing with things

I agree, that scene was fantastic.

It's probably my favorite movie of the year so far (not that I have seen a ton of movies this year). There were a few things that I could have done without (the cartoon bird (the dancing number was fine, but the bird was a little too far for me), and the French movie stuff seemed to stick out too much, and few little things), but overall I simply loved it. I highly recommend it.

Thumbs up. Not the greatest, but I have a hard time seeing much in this genre truly being great. For the type of movie it is, I can't think of anything better off-hand.

Just saw this. Loved it. Really impressed that they had the gumption to attempt that singing/musical sequence--that's the type of thing that can totally gay up a movie if done incorrectly (or worse, done more than once). Both JGL and Deschanel were awesome, and obviously extremely well-cast. I was glad it cut the cord at 95 minutes like it did instead of adding in some unneeded awkward soul-searching on Gordon-Levitt's part.

She's cute and has a very classic frame and appeal and amazing eyes, but I don't see what the huge attraction is.
I think she's really hot in general, although between Yes Man and The Happening (and wow oh wow, that dreadfully ditzy Conan interview), I'm not exactly gaga for her. But she was really good here, and credit is due her for a nice, understated performance, but also to the casting director. You couldn't just stick any hot girl in Summer's role and have it work--and it's not as though Z.D. is a great actress or anything, so that's not the reason it would fail. Like, Minka Kelly is pretty hot, but this movie wouldn't have been watchable if she had played Summer. You need some "indie quirkiness" intangibles, obviously. But you also need a face like Deschanel has, one that is just enrapturing.

Haha, when they were playing the "penis" game and Deschanel mentions how she and Puma never left the bedroom, the quick cut to JGL's "PENIS!" is just awesome.

On a final side note, I really liked how this film didn't do any Facebook/iPhone/texting/vchatting "new technology" bull****. There was barely any cell phone use. I dunno, I'm not a Luddite or anything, I just think it was a very wise decision and made the film seem more timeless.

I'm also glad that they didn't do anything like that as it really would've been against their characters. Look at the headphones that Tom uses, they aren't some new fashionable small headphones, their big headphones that someone who is into music would use. While they aren't anti-mainstream, they don't really exist in the mainstream as their interests aren't along the MTV-type lines. It also would've been a much less interesting film if they were those types of characters

Just saw this and thought i was very good. JGL's range of emotions coupled with how it jumps around in the relationships really helped keep it interesting. You really feel for him. Having gone through a nasty breakup in the last 6 months made a few of the lines and just Deschanel's character as a whole extra brutal.

and +1 for her eyes

thought it was ridiculously enjoyable. funny, sweet, real, well acted, how could anyone find fault with this film? also i can't think of a single better movie for a first date.

great film. I wish we could have delved more into the Zooey character's background a little more, but the element of mystery was important to the movie. Also would like to understand the symbolism of 'The Graduate' scene a little better, but it also was explained somewhat by the culmination of the movie. Lots of great subtle scenes in here if you can relate to them from previous experience. Also loved the ending.

That movie was seriously heartwrenching.

I dunno, I feel like first date material is better off a little lighter and fluffier and not something that makes you relive every painful moment you've ever had at the hands of a woman.

I loved it. It was seriously funny too, from start to finish.

Was Minka Kelly the chick at the end? She looked good for her 2 minute performance I guess, although the "zomg I've seen you at whatever Plaza!" thing was kinda lol.

The one thing I didn't really like was that it never really explained why they broke up - it showed all these scenes of Zooey growing distant without ever really giving any indication of why. Like, we see the second coming of the Ikea scene when she's all melancholy, and it feels kinda out of place because we don't know why, but most everything else in the movie handled in that fashion (due to the time jumping) was eventually answered so we kinda trust that this will be too, but it never is.

Great film. Good romance comedy in the likes of Nick & Norah. Levitt is great, after doing all those indies and putting in the time. One of the better movies this summer. And for all your FNL fans, gotta love the Lyla appearance

She seemed to lose interest as soon as she saw he wasn't that emotionally affected by The Graduate.

It was after that she just kind of smirked at the Ringo Starr cover and then wouldn't take his hand.

I haven't seen The Graduate so maybe that's causing me to miss something, but that was mentioned at the start of the movie as a movie that JGL watched as a child that made him have the view of romance/true love that he has, and if anything I feel like Summer would be the type to think that getting all emotional at a movie like that is stupid (she said herself - "I'm being stupid.").

I haven't seen The Graduate in forever, but from what was in the movie, I thought it was somewhat clear what they were showing (though, perhaps I misunderstood it). At the end of The Graduate, Dustin Hoffman runs in and stops the older woman's wedding. They feel the church and get on a bus. It shows them at first happy and smiling about what they just did, but the looks on their face soon turn to uncertain.

The way Summer took this could be interpreted more than one way, but I took it as Summer taking it the opposite way that JGL did. Whereas JGL saw it as a happy ending and proof of true love, Summer took it as they weren't going to make it and they had made a mistake.

Hopefully this is somewhat helpful/not totally off base.

this is definitely along the lines. One has to notice Ben's face in the scene and he's still happy, he just got his dream girl in what he has constructed in one of the most possibly romantic ways. He's chased after elaine, he's hurt her by sleeping with her mom, but in the end he feels that he's "won" her. While Tom understands the faults of Ben, he has the feeling that love does conquer all in the end and that what Ben did was an ultimate act of love as opposed to a massive act of selfishness.

But, Summer sees it from a female's POV(naturally) and we of course see Elaine very confused by her decision knowing that her relationship with Ben can never be fully realized even if he is the love of her life because of the things that Ben has done. We know that Tom hasn't done anything close to the actions that Ben did, but Summer realizes that Tom is the love of her life, but because she has let him into places of her that she has never let anyone, their relationship can't be fully realized in the way that she may have envisioned because she opened her heart to Tom and isn't fully in control of where things can go, so to get back that distance that she has always created with other men, she breaks up with Tom
