Re: 2019 Oscar Thread!

I have seen 7 of the BP nominations. I haven't seen Vice yet.

Overall the field seems pretty weak. We have 6 movies based on real persons, 3 movies about musicians, one movie which is the third(!) remake and a comic book movie.

I think Roma (a Netflix production) is the overall favorite for best picture, director and cinematography.

Are you already hooked? Wait, there is more. It's in black and white. With subtitles. A movie for people who think the break-neck pace of Downton Abbey is too exhilarating. Oh, and film students who for years to come will write papers analyzing the significance of planes, cars and dogs in the movie.
Don't get me wrong, it's a good movie and if you have seen Gravity you know that director Alfonso Cuarón has a way with pictures. You just have to be aware what you are getting yourself into.

The cynic in me thinks Black Panther was only nominated because the Academy was criticized for not having enough popular movies and not enough black actors and filmmakers being nominated. Hey, two birds with one stone.
It's a good comic book movie. If you liked the other Marvel movies you will like this one but it isn't as good as say the Avengers movie. Best motion picture of the year is a bit of a stretch.

A Star is born is the above mentioned third remake. It should be disqualified on these grounds alone. Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga deliver fine performances and deserve their best acting nominations imo.

BlacKKKlansman's nomination surprises me. It's an okay movie but Spike Lee appears to not know which direction he wanted to go. Is it a drama? Is it a comedy? Is it a crime movie? In the end you have a bunch of ingredients that don't compliment each other.

I really liked Bohemian Rhapsody. It certainly helps if you like Queen, at least their big hits.It might be my second favorite out of the bunch even though it's a bit shallow and unneccessarily takes liberties with historical accuracy. Rami Malek is my favorite for best actor.

The Favourite is a well acted period piece. I'd describe it as Amadeus meets The Duchess. If that sounds like something you are interested in then you will definitely enjoy The Favourite. Olivia Colman for best actress and Rachel Weisz for best supporting actress.

It's tough to pick a favourite but mine is probably Green Book. A compelling story, good acting, nice visuals. It retells the story of sophisticated African-American pianist Dr. Don Shirley touring the Deep South during the civil rights era with his streetwise Italian-American driver from the Bronx.
Just like Bohemian Rhapsody it takes serious liberties with historical accuracy, for example downplaying how dangerous the South really was for African-Americans during that time. It's also been justifiedly criticized for telling Dr.Shirley's story through the eyes of a white person. This is reflected in Viggo Mortensen being nominated as best actor, while Mahershala Ali is nominated in the supporting actors category.

Additionally, Richard E.Grant for best supporting actor (Can you ever forgive me?)

C'mon Dom, you can't just leave it as a plain list. Give us your thoughts on what you think is going to happen and what you think should happen.

I enjoyed the Favorite. I'm not really into period films, but there was enough dark humor that I got hooked.

All you Black Panther cynics and lollers, please note that it won the entire SAG awards, so take that!

I normally would, but there's only one film nominated for BP that I put on my best of the year list - The Favorite. And the best performance of the year wasn't even nominated - Ethan Hawke in First Reformed.

But I will say that Roma will most likely win BP and Cinematography. Close will win, and Malek will win.

Re: 2019 Oscar Thread!

Been watching Oscar pre-show for about 20 mins now and they’ve had three separate interviews with people from Crazy Rich Asians which seems like a lot for a movie with zero nominations.

I see there is no host due some PC backlash on Kevin Hart - that could be a plus

Re: 2019 Oscar Thread!

if anyone wants to make any bets on best picture, i'd like to bet roma at -160 to win best picture, alternatively, green book not to win at -250. any amount is fine.
