Re: 2014 Android thread

Oh yes voicemails are annoying. My mum would call me and leave a message saying "oh hey its me your mum". I had to call the VM and listen to the message so the notification goes away. My tips is to tell your contacts to only leave VM if they actually need to tell you something.

The worst is when I'm listening to music and what's the next song? Voicemail-3!

I solved this problem by just never setting up VM. Now I don't get any. I realized that I never wanted to listen to them anyway. I had the missed call log in my phone already and most messages consisted of "Call me back"

People need to learn VMs are annoying and text or email work much better when an actual message needs to be sent.

I like Pocket Casts for podcasts. Not sure how anything else could be better, it is reliable, uses their servers to minimise bandwidth use, good notification shade and widget controls and can download in the background (on wifi only if you prefer) if you set it up. Also does some kind of sync thing across devices somehow, though I dont use that.

Very, very happy with Pocket Casts as well. Using it on my Nexus 7 II and iPhone 4S. Flawless app.

Two things about Evernote I don't like

1 can a ***** get a black background with white font? Or whatever colors I want? I'm not a huge fan of staring directly in to a flashlight.

2 when I go to edit a note, it always defaults the cursor to the very top of the note. I have notes that are super long and I scroll so long that the glass on that side of the phone is eroding. Can I just get it to default where I left off? Like a normal softwares would do?

Re: 2014 Android thread

Best way to buy used phones that's not off of Craigslist? My dad, who doesn't live near me, lost his phone and needs a new one. I just want to get him a used S3 (which is what he used to have so he won't need to learn his way around a new skin) but I also want to find a trustworthy online source so that I can order it for him.

My default shopping stop is Amazon, and there are a few used phones, but it's tough to tell how reliable the seller is and what kind of condition the phone is in. Any other sites where you can buy reliable used phones for not too much of a markup?

Also, best 3rd party phone insurance? My dad will almost certainly break or lose his phone in the next year.

One benefit of craigslist to consider is that you can have them meet you at your carrier's store and have the carrier make sure it can be activated.

Yeah but my parents don't have time to deal with that and don't like meeting random people. They'd rather buy it from a trustworthy site even if it costs a little more.

I'm currently leaning towards Gazelle. No Sprint S3s right now, but they have a few Moto Xs for about $220-240 in 'very good' condition and they guarantee they'll work. Any issues with that plan?

Re: 2014 Android thread

Not that anyone cares, but I did end up going with the Moto X for $220 in 'very good condition' from Gazelle. They seem to have a decent return policy if anything is wrong.

Re: 2014 Android thread

My Galaxy S4 has a problem and the phone company are going to replace it. They're going to deliver another one and at that time I'm to hand over my phone to them. So I will factory reset the phone and remove the SIM before I do that.

What I'm wondering is if there's an easy way to just back up the entire phone to PC and then restore the new phone from the backup. I won't have both phones at the same time and the solutions that I've found online all require me to have both.

Thanks!

Re: 2014 Android thread

titanium allows you to backup your apps on the SD iirc. Most everything else should be linked to your google account.

The free version of BeyondPod is my favorite. Best looking UI by far. Downsides from using the free version are that you have to manually update your feeds.

Upload and stream from Play Music is the best free option, for offline players of locally stored MP3s I always liked Mortplayer.
